Forums - Sony - Sony needs more first party games

@Yojimbo:

 PS1 - 12.5 - 14 million, PS2 - 16 - 24 million.

I know the game won't be released for awhile yet, but I can't see it approaching the numbers of either of the previous games. Especially when you consider that MGS3 sold significantly less, when the install base was significantly more.

More first party games? Why? So they can end up with the same stigma Nintendo has?

I would like to see that, Nintendo owns first party games, most of them classic shigsy madness.

Compared to the first party games on my wii, my first party playstation 3 games lack something, probably eiji ounouma and mario

The problem though is the better your first party games do and the less your third party does the more it discourages developers from working with that company.

Also, the more people who don't work for your company whine in the media about your hoarding of billions of dollars of profit.

Sony needs more well-known first party games just as Nintendo needs more well-known 3rd party ones.

@Onna76
You're in my mind; Level5 and team Ico games, please come!

Level 5 is doing White Knight Story, are they not?

it would of been better if they did dark cloud 3 instead

I disagree; the trailers of White Knight Story alone pretty much forced me to buy a PS3.

This is Sony's mentality - and its completely wrong. What they need is more THIRD-PARTY games. Its the gap in the release schedule that is killing them.

They might have 5 or 6 "killer-apps" a year. Each one will (hopefully) have a great launch - a solid week or two, then maybe some legs. But that still accounts for maybe 10 weeks out of 52 - what about all the other weeks?

The loss in momentum from the gaps is killing them - its exactly what happened to the GC with Nintendo. 1st-party titles were great, had great sales, boosted hardware - but it couldn't compete week in, week out.

...

Its also no accident that of the BIG selling PS3 titles this year - its the well known brands that are doing great guns (CoD, Guitar Hero - and Assassins to some extent).

Make no mistake - '08 (in many ways) is the make or break year for the PS3. Although I still think they can lag the 360 (by a little), and still have a great '09.
(much depends on whether Sony is happy if the PS3 has a PSP type performance...)

Other than simply offering a reason to get a PS3 rather than a 360, the more first party games there are, the better, as they are the best games (on average) as the Sony first party devs (and Insomniac) seem to be able to get the most out of the system, although exclusives are

Personally, there are plenty of 1st party games coming, it's just a matter of when. GT 5 is coming, and should be here by the end of the year, but it is still a should, not definite. MGS 4, although it should make April, has been delayed for a long time. Naughty Dog wont get anything out till 09, Insomniac will get something out. MS 2 is coming, and we should see more DLC for Warhawk next year. There is also inFamous next year, LBP, but there are rumours that it has been delayed until the end of the year. WipEout HD is being made but that is not a major release, just a downloadable game (as far as I know). GoW 3 will not come out till 09. There is also the Getaway and 8 days to Vegas coming but nobody knows when or anything about them apart from the obvious (the Getaway is in London and 8 days to Vegas is about going to Vegas I think).

Sony's main problem is delays
