It really gives no sense to talk about who will win..

Wii - who will ever doubt, that this console can be a beast like it is ?

XBOX360 - amazing console - who ever think in 2005, that this console can compete with SONY - must be a fool.

PS3 - great performance and finaly, it have what it deserve..

DS - something unbelieveble :-O

PSP - well, someone had to be last.. but it really keeps on the handheld market :)

Companies:

Nintendo - total winner of this generation - DS, Wii makes their goal to be the best console maker of the all time

Sony - well.. i think, that they learn their lesson, that they are not the only, who dictate when a new generation start.. They were loosing this generation very much..but at the end it seems that it is paying off

Microsoft - compete with SONY and really brave :)

Even if XBOX will end as 3.console - games will be made for it - there are round 50mil console and counting :) so not an abadoned amount of players :) There is only one winner :)

P L A Y E R S :) This generation serves us with great fruits :)

I'll drink to that!

xbox 360 has been in the green for a few years now and has gotten out of debt from the xbox 1 for like 3 years now

This is wrong. The Xbox 360 has recovered its own losses, but is still far away from having made back all the money that was lost on the first Xbox.

On topic: Unlike in the past, now I think the PS3 is going to make it. Microsoft has done everything they realistically could, but it's not going to be enough in the end. Sony will continue their global expansion and thus gain a first mover advantage over Microsoft in all those countries where the PS3 officially launched/will launch before the 360. Sales in each country individually probably won't be much to speak of, but it all adds up over time.

I was about to say the same thing.  I think he's confused because I believe 3 years ago is when the 360 finally started turning profit on each one sold.

@ OP

I can say without a doubt, the PS3 will take 2nd.  If Sony keeps going like they are, they may even be able to completely squash the shipped gap by the end of the year.  The sold gap by the end of this fiscal year.  The only thing that can save the 360 is if Kinect has another big holiday season.  However, I doubt that will happen without a price cut, and even if it did it will still mostly be for the US.  Even if Kinect has a great holiday in the states, it won't be able to change how big the PS3 will be in EMEAA and Japan.

So for the rest of the year, I see the PS3 selling more than the 360 quarterly, with maybe the 360 tying it for Q4 '11.

Yes it is profitable for each unit sold, as in it cost less to manufacture than the price they sell it for.  But, it's going to take much more than a few years of profit for MS to make back the billions it lost on the Xbox and 360 at the beginning of the gen.

Considering that 'statistical tie' is a boring answer, I'm going to go with the 360. Due to the PS3's architecture, MS can always keep the 360 cheaper. The 360 could easily be sold for $99-$129 at some foreseeable point in the future, whereas I doubt the PS3 will ever hit that price.

Additionally, the 360 seems more likely to keep getting madden/CoD ports for longer into the next gen than the PS3 will, which, coupled with it's lower price will make it quite attractive to many.

Then why wont MS just do the price cut now since Ps3 has been outselling xbox 360 basically the whole year.

If there are any price cuts this year, they will all be waiting for E3 to announce them, it gets the biggest press coverage, so more consumers will know about the price drop, i certainly bet if you asked the average gamer on the street in Europe they wouldnt know the PSP had just had a price cut.

E3 is also bang in the middle of the slow sales period so its a good time to start the boost, a price cut can give, giving it time to build momentum up to xmas.

On the other hand in the console business, the xbox sold more than the gamecube so was therefore "more successful" and "it finished second", even though the xbox lost $bns and gamecube made money.

I've heard this one pretty often, but .. did it really make money?

Nintendo was in the black during GC era, yes, but at the same time Nintendo also had the very successful Gameboy Advanced and launched the DS, which (very soon) is  going to be the best sold console ever (I'm aware that it didn't really take off until almost the very end of GC business though), yet people seem to attribute Nintendo's good performance to the GC? Is there any information in the financial reports that supports this ?

edit: happy now Holocaust? *rollseyes*

There was a profits chart released a while back showing a breakdown of the each manufacturer's performance.

On all systems Nintendo was in the black. I'll try to find it. It's improtant to remember as well that unlike MS and Sony Nintendo sell their consoles at a pretty high profit margin while the other two sell theirs at a loss at launch and  for a long while after.

who said: "xbox 360 has been in the green for a few years now and has gotten out of debt from the xbox 1 for like 3 years now".

C'mon man, show some common sense. The xbox lost around $4bn (or so I read, lets say $3bn for arguments sake). Are you seriously saying that the x360 has made a profit of even $2bn to cover this at the same time cover it's own operating cost in 3years?

One more thing. MS DO NOT release figures for the x360, only for their EDD.  These are the figures you see. How you came to the above conclusion without MS  releasing x360 individual profit details is indeed amazing.

The EDD hasn't made no where near that in 3yrs in profits, far less the x360.
