no, cause touch screen doesn't works well in every games, mostly on mini casual genre only, same thing goes to motion control... several genre games really need a controller to work more perfectly...

I agree with your second statement, but a dent is far from making handhelds obsolete as some people think.
What's funny is that if smart phone games were to become the norm, then it would be that market that would be vulnerable to disruption by dedicated handhelds which have actual controller interfaces. Things happen in cycles and history repeats itself.
As an analogy, rock/metal were the popular "cool" rebel music in the '80s. When rap/hip-hop achieved that popularity in the '90s did rock music suddenly go away? Despite seeing crossovers of both styles (just as we see console type games on phones), there is still a yearning for each as an individual, and neither is going anywhere.
Smart phones are increasingly popular, and thus the ability to play games on them will always be relevant, but there will also always be people who want a dedicated handheld for what they do right, simply because the games market is far too big and lucrative for both not to coexist, IMO.

The underlying message that every game is going to be in 3D will do more harm than cheaper games on another platform that isn't even competing for the same market. Of course any mistakes Nintendo will make will be ignored in order to push the "iOS is the future of mobile gaming" agenda. And once Nintendo finally remembers what the key features of a handheld are, then they will be able to sell hardware at new record levels and supposed industry insiders will have no clue why. |
Yes yes and yes. I hope Apple do's win over the market. cause im tired of companys only Moving outMarket when they are geting there ass kicked.
Nintendo needs to Keep moving outmarket like it did with the Wii and DS and instead move to the Core now that it has success and pmps out the 3DS. >.<
Apple got its ass handed by MS and it took them how many years to move outmarket with the Iphone's etc? Now that Apple have success they will move towards the Core and eventually lose to the next Company moving forward.
Its the same crap over and over again. Until a company just keeps moving outmarket Gen after gen and takes over the world.

For serious now, I still can't see why people would presume that handheld smartphones would have no impact on handheld consoles. The market for handheld console games is filled by titles which are games you can play for 1-15 minutes and put down which obviously isn't going to be a major stressor on the battery life of any smartphone. Most of these 1-15 minute games are perfectly doable with motion controls and a touch screen so again the question of interface isn't exactly going to be the killer blow either. Finally we're not talking about just smart-phones here, we also have tablets and mobile media devices like the iPad and iTouch which fill in significant niches in the market so with having significantly cheaper titles to go along with it you have several advantages for smartphones and similar to eek away significant niches of what was once the sole domain of handheld consoles.
Tease.

bah, the itouch exists and sells well for a reason -- people use this device for a heck of a lot more than just to make phone calls. it is first and formost a multi-media device of which gaming is a part. i also think you're being a bit naive about how far behind IOs it is. plants vs. zombies is on IOs and DS (and only 1/10 the price on IOs btw). Iphone has a third person dead space -- wii doesn't even have one of those.
Next, your PC comparison is backwards: IOs and 3DS/NGP are competitors -- 3DS/NGP can match or exceed every (gaming) area of IOs devices. home consoles and PCs are competitors -- PCs can match or exceed every (gaming) area of home consoles. you shouldn't be asking if PCs hindered home consoles...you should be asking if home consoles hindered PC gaming.
Finally, let me just cap by saying this. i'm a "core" gaming and as evidence i submit my dedicated status as a VGC poster and purchase dozens of games a year. I have in the last two years put more time and more money into my IOs games that i have into my DS. i do this because it is a more convienent and more compelling device for the purpose of mobile gaming. i underline mobile because i know i've seen you post about how bringing the "console" experience to mobile devices (ala psp, NPG) doesn't fit what the market wants. the market wants pick-up-and-play games and IOs does that extreeeeemmlly well.
ignore apple at your own peril. dedicated devices whether it be for gaming, reading, gps, phone, internet, ect are all trending away from importance. |
Tough I agree with most of your rant, the truth is that there is a 70 million market even for the PSP. Yes the Iphone might hinder the handheld sales, but there will always be a market for, dar I say, more professionaly handheld systems.
The question is: will we see any more 200million sales/generation, or more like 100-150 million. Either way, there still is and will be a market for SOny and Nintendo ( myabe even MS) portables.
Vote the Mayor for Mayor!
LOOOL@ phones are leagues behind in terms of graphics.

psp is at 70 million, IOS is at 160 million. i know, i know -- "people could have bought multiple devices". true but you can say the same thing about the DS or the psp. ...and IOs is up YoY. i can't find a solid number on android but from what i understand the combined total of all android devices is even larger. This is from a year ago but apparently the number of mobile phones (not just smartphones) has surpased 4.6 billion. the sales potential difference is huge.
but anyways, i tried to chose my words carefully when i said "trending away from importance". Nintendo/Sony won't be booted out of the handheld market overnight. but remember, 5 years ago apple didn't exist in gaming. today we're debating their relative importance to nintnedo/sony. 5 years from now i wouldn't be surprised to find apple much more important than nintnedo or sony.
to the dedicated device thing. maybe. i mean, there still are people that use film cameras. not many but they do exist. but the thing is ... someone has to make that device. if the money in dedicated gaming devices dries up so will the hardware and software providers. because of the software dependence on the usefulness a dedicated gaming device -- i'm not so sure gaming can really support a niche market like other technologies can. remember, when you say "professional" you really mean "expensive".
All The phones will do is hinder the Natural Growth of the game Core market. Who cares.
Sony already has a PsP phone on the market.

| superchunk said: No it won't. iPhone is a phone first and foremost. Its gaming capabilities are now and will always be leagues behind the current handhelds in terms of graphics, game selection (latest and greatest vs really old ports or gimped ports), and above all controls. There is no difference between in the relationship of iPhone (and other smartphones) to handheld consoles as PCs to home consoles. Hell, in all reality, PCs are much more of a competitor because they can and do match or exceed every area as home consoles. However, PCs have NEVER stunted the growth or acceptance of home consoles and there is no reason to think that the smartphone market will ever stunt the handheld market. There are far more differences between these markets than simularities and as such, they will have little crossover. Most people will own a phone regardless of anything else and the people who'd consider buying a handheld console will do so anyways as their will always exist an experience that their phone simply cannot provide. |
Sorry to break it to you, but the iPhones is defintely not behind in graphics. The iPhone 6 will probably even beat the NGP in graphics.
Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.
