I agree with your second statement, but a dent is far from making handhelds obsolete as some people think.
What's funny is that if smart phone games were to become the norm, then it would be that market that would be vulnerable to disruption by dedicated handhelds which have actual controller interfaces. Things happen in cycles and history repeats itself.
As an analogy, rock/metal were the popular "cool" rebel music in the '80s. When rap/hip-hop achieved that popularity in the '90s did rock music suddenly go away? Despite seeing crossovers of both styles (just as we see console type games on phones), there is still a yearning for each as an individual, and neither is going anywhere.
Smart phones are increasingly popular, and thus the ability to play games on them will always be relevant, but there will also always be people who want a dedicated handheld for what they do right, simply because the games market is far too big and lucrative for both not to coexist, IMO.
