Should agree with you, there are so much owners of all systems unbieased members that complain about everything one do and cheerish all the other do that it gets fantastic.

This is officially the worst researched thread I have ever had the misfortune to endure. Im not even a member of this site, nor do I own a PS3 and have registered purely to write a reply to this ridiculus outlook you appear to be labouring over.

1. I know plenty of people who used otherOS before it was removed. That fact that you didnt use it makes it your opinion that 'people are complaining over nothing', not a certifiable fact. What is a fact is that many people paid $800 as you so rightly quoted for a machine with 'otherOS' and were not offered any type of compensation when the feature was removed. Even so, this isnt the main reason for all this hurlyburly.

2. The main reason for the response from anonymous is that Geohot placed a video on youtube and on his own site showing his ps3 hack. Sony then filed civil case requesting that the IP address of ANYONE who viewed either the youtube video or the site be supoened FROM YOUTUBE and Geohots host. Thats ANYONE who may have stumbled upon the video or been redirected to it or anyother method innocent members of the public come across youtube videos. UNBELIEVABLY the court agreed ad thus over 10,000 IP addresses were passed over for further investigation. Thats a MASSIVE INVASION of peoples right to privacy online. Thats the reason for the anonymous involvement, nothing else.

3. You said 'anonymous' has done nothing of note other than DDoS'ing which anybody can do. How about when they broke into HBGary a $2 million governmental private security firm after it falsely claimed it had pentrated its members, releasing 60,000 emails outlining how the company was using illegal methods to obtain finances and information, a crime they are currently explaining under congressional commitee. How about when they broke into the Bank of America releasing emails outlining how it has been deleting account details from their systems for no reason after requests from external insurance agencies. The list goes on.....and on......and on.....

I am not a member of anonymous, merely a sympathiser. I also sympathise with you guys because its the gamer who is getting the short end of the stick in all of this. The point however still remains that there is always going to be a 'geohot' trying to hack any electronic device released and the way to deal with this is not by using your corporate power to pull data on thousands of individuals from the internet, the vast majority of which have done absolutely nothing wrong. Who knows, you have a ps3, maybe you looked at the video out of curiosity and are now being investigated by sony . . . . .

You are even less informed... PS3 costed 800 to make, they were never retailed at that price... they were 600... go troll elsewhere.

And constitution don't grant you a "freedom of speech online for anything"... you may have a freedom of speech independent than the Media, but you are also liable for what you say - and this is what Sony is trying there.

About the IP that would be invasion of privacy, but as Sony got it legally in court then no one can sue then or say they done anything illegal - no matter how much you don't like it - even more because the use is restrict to prove jurisdiction not hack your account - as some hackers would do (not all sure).

And about don't letting people see GeoHotz saying that isn't free of speech also, that is free acess to information (that isn't even a constitutional right)...

GeoHotz could curse Sony in 100 different languages and badmouth them on TV or newspaper and Sony couldn't - and probably wouldn't even try even more because they would gain publicity, maybe if they see harm to their pockets they may prosecute to compensation (and if GeoHotz were right about his complaint Sony that would need to pay legal expenses)... What he did isn't freedom of speech is breach of some laws.

Who mentioned anything about freedom of speech? I certainly didnt.

Who said Sony illegally gained access to IP addresses from youtube and geohot's host. I certainly didnt.

Who mentioned anything about the 'constitution'? Ive got news or you bro, the whole world doesnt revolve around america. Youtube doesnt filter on counrty of origin for user submitted videos. The supoened IP's are from all over the globe, it was only tried in america because thats where youtube is hosted and registered as a company.

My arguement is that Sony is currently investigating thousands of innocent people's internet connections on the basis that they watched a youtube video . . . A step well beyond the power of any corporate entity. Even ISP's are forbidden from monitoring internet traffic unless they have a legitimate reason why they should be, so what makes Sony so special?

Are you seriously suggesting that upon release a PS3 cost $800 to manufacture yet they were retailing them at $600? I used to work at the head office of the largest electronics consumer retailer in the UK and I can tell you something, everything you see as 'a great sale price' etc still has a profit margin in there. Thats the nature of business. Not only would Sony be losing $200 per unit on the manufacturing costs, they'd also be losing cash on inventory and logistical overheads.

My viewpoint is that Geohot paid his '$600' for a bunch of electrical components soldered together and placed in a plastic enclosure and should be able to do whatever he wants with it. Afterall, it is legally his property. He didnt rent his ps3 from Sony, he bought it.

I agree that what he did would probably influence the lives of the games developers and Sony. I have never said otherwise. But what about all the artists, actors, distributors and film companies currently losing billions of dollars through illegal torrenting. None of them have ever supoened the millions of internet connections worldwide that regularly download illegal movies, or software, or music.

And finally, . . . a troll is someone who enters a thread and posts off topic discussion, usually in an attempt to divert attention away from the original post. Given that my post reflected my opinion ABOUT THE ORIGINAL POST I daresay this is a crime I am yet to commit. You may wanna brush the dust off that urban dictionary of yours and look the word 'troll' up.

Sony lawyers just have access from where they are seeing the information not about where they spend their money or which porn site they navigate.

And if you search a little you can see how much sony lost in the inital sales, manufacture cost shipping and everything estimated to 850 dollars, and retail were 600 dollars... so you may work for a eletronic company, but you don't know how everything works, you may be wrong sometimes.

And about his right to hack no one is denying his rights, it's about what he is doing with his right that matters, and releasing harmfull content may be liability issue and ground for sueing.

If you aren't a member of the site, don't care about the involvement of the company and just entered to badmouth the OP "research" this is also trolling.

Heh, thought there was something fishy about this thread, knowing this guy's grammatical competence.

He didn't even change the font, or remove the "EDIT" from the OP. That's just plain lazy.

And that's exactly what happened... They lost over 6 billion dollars because of selling PS3s for a loss for around 4 years, they've started earning money on each PS3 sold only recently thanks to taking features out and reducing production costs.

If thats the case then I'll glady hold up my hands and say on that specific point I was wrong. It only adds to the fact that Sony's recent corporate decisions seem to be leading them from bad to worse.

It also still leaves the fact that they abused their corporate power to invade the privacy of innocent individuals.

And might I add for all the people saying hacking is wrong and to the OP who actually posted 'Hacking the PS3 software is equivalent to hacking Windows software and I am pretty sure that is illegal' you might find this article of particular interest: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_BMG_copy_protection_rootkit_scandal

Whats that? Sony illegally rootkitting thousands of windows machines to track copyright USING LAME and VLC code which they werent legally permitted to use. Pot calling the kettle black if you ask me.
