Forums - General - My computer died, anybody know what the heck went wrong?

Alright so too days ago my computer crashed. I could barely do anything I tried control alt delete to close which ever program was hogging up the CPU. I found that something called SVChost or what ever was using 99% of the CPU. I couldn't close it because it was a system function.

I shut my computer down and restarted. I didn't notice much was wrong until the next day. When I logged in the next day I noticed that my Anti-Virus program didn't boot up like it always does. So I manually tried booting it, when I did I got this weird message saying something that the link did not work and that I needed to fix it in the folder control panel.

I tried fixing it in the folder control panel but couldn't get it running. I went online to try and find out how to fix it and get my anti virus running. When suddenly Fire Fox closed. I tried openning it and it gave me the same message. I tried going into the folder control panel and fixing it. I then openned Explorer and started researching again when suddenly Explorer crashed. I got the same message again. I decided to use Chrome, while on Chrome I lost internet, it said my wireless connection couldn't be openned due to a problem in the folder control panel.

So I went into my computers control panel but couldn't use anything. The error message started showing up for everything. I couldn't access any of my controls. Microsoft Office went down every single program on my computer seized up.

I turned off the computer and booted up safe mode , I tried doing a system restore but I couldn't it gave me the same error message. I then searched my desk for the Microsoft XP boot disks to re-instal XP. But found out my boot disks I got with my computer are actually for a NoteBook and not my PC, last time I deal with an independant computer shop.

So anyways it seems my home computer is dead now, I think it was a virus but I don't know. What do you think?

Also I guess I won't be online often anymore, I tried using VGChartz with my Wii and DS but both systems said they had insufficient memory to run VGChartz.

This sucks monkey balls, any suggestions on what I could try to do? (If your a computer knowledged person)

I'm going to try a fresh install, my uncle has Windows XP so I'm going to try installing it. As for a new HDD, I've put over 500$ in repairing this peice of crap every time it breaks down. I myself don't know how to build a computer and such (I know really odd for a nerd not to know this stuff). So I always sent it to London Drugs to get it fixed. If I have to buy any more parts or pay for anymore repairs I'm gonna freak.

Also sadly I am in debt over 1,200$ right now and only make 500$ a month. So buying a new HDD or a new computer are both pretty much out of the question right now. Lets hope I can do a fresh install.

I hope its not the hard drive. But the computer is 5 years old I've already had to replace the graphic's card, fan and something else which  cost me like 200$. I am so sick of computers, my consoles don't break down all the time, this is why I'm not a PC gamer.

sounds like an pretty crazy virus is causing your CPU to max out on some program crashing your computer. Hopefully you have the Windows disk or go to another computer, download windows (code on your computer hopefully) and then reinstall windows.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

try fresh install over existing HDD first before worrying to much. thats why I put virus as A instead of B. a fresh install should work, and whatever anti-virus you were using drop it. AVG Free and SpyBot are the way to go.

I had AVG Free and Shaw Secure. Shaw Secure went first . I don't know what happened to AVGFree it pretty much dissapeared.

If you get:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653

and mouse over the process that is causeing the 99% it will give you the list of services that are using this svchost process. Then if it looks funky, then you can right click and do a little research on yoru own, to see if you can remove it or not. Worst comes to worst you end up with a reformat anyhow.

svchost is the main piece of software running the internet on the platform. it just sounds like he has a virus that is inviting all his buddies along.

I am well aware. It also means he might be able to single out which file it is.
