Clearly your a JRPG fan, but have you played the older Final Fantasies? FFXIII doesn't light a match compared to Final Fantasy V and VI, and a lot of people love VII and VIII.

You should give Lost Odyssey a try, it's somewhat better then FFXIII, more original, less linear, and just better. I'm going to boot up Infinite Undiscovery and Tales of Vesperia over the summer. I have a lot of JRPG's to catch up on.

Still, just because you're not a fan of WRPG's doesn't mean they suck this gen. The JRPG genre has been on a downward spiral since the SNES and arguably the PS1 days. You jsut don't see as many good JRPG's as you did back then, and NONE to the level of quality Chrono Trigger, FFVI, and Super Mario RPG were at.

This gen, WRPG's are kicking JRPG's butts. FFXIII won GOTY on 1 website, well Mass Effect 2 won it on most websites. Even then FFXIII is one JRPG, what else has there been thats been good and sold well lately? Demon Souls, Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia, Star Ocean, Valkeria Chonicles, those are all 2008/2009 games, they are old. There are a few good ones coming this fall, but not many (Dark Souls, XenoBlade). In the last 2 years the WRPG genre has seen Mass Effect 2, Fallout NV, and Dragon Age 2 to name a few, and this fall were going to see Mass Effect 3 and Elder Scrolls 5.

jrpgs are only loing to wrpgs this gen in sales to me. you said to name a few regarding wrpgs but honestly those were most of the good ones. Ive seen more garbage wrpgs this jen than jrpgs. Also ff5 really doesnt compare to ff13 on any level its story was meh lol. And saying that jrpgs have been on a downard spiral is just opinion based to me cause ive played alot of great jrpgs this gen some with better qualities than the snes and ps1 days.

Ratings too. Have any JRPG's scored 9.5 or higher? Heck only 3 have gotten 9/10 ratings or higher (Demon Souls, Valkeria Chronicles, and Lost Odyssey).

lolwut. Lost Odyssey has a sub-80% review average.

Final Fantasy lost it's charm in the PS2 era. I mean FFXI and FFXIV are just plain garbage, FFXII was mostly automatic gameplay, and FFX was alright, but nothing compared to the SNES and PS1 Final Fantasy's.

I mean quality aside, just compare how many good JRPGs there were during the PS2 era and now in this one. The current gen sees maybe 1-4 good JRPGs a year, when PS2 was around it was abut 10 a year. I mean where the heck is Suidoken?

I know you agree that the SNES and PS1 generation had the most good quality JRPGs. Well PS2 was somewhat below the PS1 in terms of number and quality and the Wii/PS3/360 mix is a level below that. Hence downward spiral, I think most can agree they are loosing the attention they got before.

Oh know were going to metascores? most people who play jrpgs woul;d give them much higher scores than what professional reviewers are gviving them. Just look at tales of vesperia its meta is like 79 but it whipes the floor with most wrpgs in my opinion. but regardless of what you say or i say its all opinionated not fact. you cant prove to me on a large scale that  jrpg fans are dissapointed with this gens jrpgs because theirs to much to enjoy. And no id actually say that last gen and this gen has the most quality jrpgs your letting nostalgia blind you from good games this and last gen. Anf ff9 and 10 are my favorite final fantasies and they are better thn any 16 and 8 bit variations in the series.

No I'm not letting Nostalia blind me because I played and beat Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 1,2,4-7, Parasite Eve, and many others during the PS2 era. During the SNES era i wasn't a RPG fan, I mainly played Mario Kart and Donkey Kong Country. Older gens had it better, FFX I though was terrible, I barely was able to beat it. I only beat it because the older games were so good, but honestly, to me Square Enix lost all quality after it merged with enix.

I have yet to play Tales of Vesperia (after exams), but if it's anything like Tales of Symphonia is know it will be good. Still as a massive JRPG fan, I'm just really dissapointed this gen, both home console AND handheld. The quality of many JRPG's have dropped, Golden Sun: Dark Dawn was my biggest disappointment, and what the heck happened to Pokemon and Fire Emblem?

Metascore is stupid too, a lot of people don't like the genre, but when you look at some of the bigger websites, and even those didicated to JRPG's, scores are lower, and the number of games is down.

I mean take the Wii for instance, except for Fire Emblem I don't even own a JRPG, and that's my favorite genre. I'm sure XenoBlade, Dragon Quest X and hopefully The Last Story will be amazing, but really is that all the good JRPG's the best selling console gets?

Also rip on Fallout and Mass Effect all you like, but to many Mass Effect 2 was GOTY last year and I can see why. I honestly can't pick which game I like more ME2 or Chrono Trigger, and thats a damn hard plateau to get to in my opinion. I also enjoyed Fallout 3 more then Demon Souls, Lost Odyssey, and well... ever JRPG I've played this gen. I hated Older Scroll IV, but why am I enjoying Dragon Age 2 as much as Demon Souls? WRPG's are taking a part of a much bigger market share then ever before, the JRPG genre has died down significantly.

I never ripped on fallout i love the series. But regardless what were saying is all opinionated in the end to different tastes i suppose.

Maybe by metascore, but on the wedsites I look at it's an 8-9/10. Either way, coun't that game out and only 2 JRPG's have gotten 9/10 scores, and just.

Well regardless, the adundance of titles is down, and there was no such thing as an MMO Final Fantasy before PS2. Reading most websites review of the SNES and PS1, I feel the SNES and PS1 were much better on the JRPG's then developers are now.

There are more great games this gen then any other before it, but the RPG kingdom is becoming split. JRPG's used to be a bigger genre, and now WRPG's are taking away most of the sales.

And I still feel quality is dropping. Not one JRPG has yet to impress and shock me with the story. Demon Souls and Lost Odyssey were fun, and FFXIII wasn't bad (from what I've played). I still have yet to play Tales of Vesperia, Infinite Undiscovery, Star Ocean, and Fire Emblem (Summer goals), but from what I've heard, I don't expect them to blow me away. They will be fun, but the only game I have seen to even come close to Chrono Trigger/FFVI/Super Mario RPG level of quality was Mass Effect 2. I know it's a hybrid, but it was fun as hell. Fallout 3 was pretty good too, but the DLC was kind of dry.

What's kind of funny is VGC's article with Platnium games. I really enjoyed Vanquish, and that's the only japanese game this generation which I really loved. I have yet to play Bayonetta and MadWorld, but now that I know they are all Platnium Games titles, I'm more likely to play them. Wasn't planing on getting Bayonetta at first.

Yes, but the market is growing, and JRPG sales are not growing accordingly. Also since the number of games are going down, overall sales are lower.

Reading articles, such as the one about Platnium Games, further my opinion that the JRPG genre is going down. Not because of popularity, but because no one is taking the time and effort to make a good one anymore.

That said, I'm looking forward to beating Final Fantasy XIII and starting up Tales of Vesperia, Dragon Age, and Infinite Undiscovery. Don't know which one to tackle first, any suggestions?

BTW, Dark Souls is my most hyped JRPG this fall, I'm pretty excited, Demon Souls was really good.

Symphonia started slow, but I loved the gameplay. I'm looking forward to it.
