PSN is vastly superior, because it has a better selection of downloadable games.

I disagree. Until psn gets UNO, it will continue to be laughable in my eyes.

Forever the champion of truth and justice, I have to tell you:  PSN DOES have Uno.  They got it last year.

Shit just got real.

*cracks knuckles*  Okay.  I've had a good night's sleep.  I'm refreshed and ready to post.  I'm currently logged in to both Xbox Live and the PSN in my game room so I'm not going to post anything unless I see it first hand.  Both of my consoles are connected to the same TV with PS3 connected to HDMI 2 and Xbox 360 connected to HDMI 3.

  • First off, let's shut Blackbuster Critic up.  He complained about Xbox Live having ads.  It does.  Normally (but not always), the ads are either contests where you can win MS points, free wallpapers, or gamer pics.  There's no "video of a car driving" and shit like he says (*edit* well, I'll be damned.  I clicked on one of the ads and there was a part were I could watch a video of a car driving.  I guess I was wrong.*).  And I'm logged into the PSN as we speak.  Ads.  Some pertain to PSN content (which I don't count).  And then theres the "All new Ford Focus" ad, the "MLB TV"  right there on the front page.  People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.  There's also an ad for the movie Black Swan on both the PS3 and Xbox 360.  I don't hold this against either system because, like most of these "ads", it's telling users what content is available ON THE SYSTEM.
  • Netflix.  Both consoles offer Netflix.  On the 360, you can actually see which movie your friend is watching and you can join them.  Both of you can watch the same movie at the same time and your avatars will be sitting in a theater together.  You can talk to them.  In fact, when you log into Netflix (or any game), the console will tell you "friends watching Netflix" or "Friends playing Street Fighter 4" and with the touch of the guide button, a list of friends and what they're watching will appear.
  • The PS3 browser:  It was great like the Wii browser, initially.  It's in dire need of an update.  I used to use both browsers a lot but now, even sites like VGChartz don't work on it.  Try going to last.fm on it.  It won't run the content.  Try going to youtube.  It will take you to "youtube XL" (aka the mobile version of youtube).  Try going to myspace.  You can't even look at a profile.  ESPN on Xbox 360 isn't a website (espn.com).  It's ESPN.  You can watch videos on demand, live events, etc.  Heck, even if you have Kinect, you can just tell the TV "Xbox, ESpn, play video 6, fast forward, play" and it will do all of those things with the clarity of DirectTV.  You guys seem to think that Twitter, Facebook, ESPN, and Last.FM are just the websites.  It's not.  They're like Aps.  I will admit, I don't have a Facebook account (did I mention I had a crazy GF?) but myspace will NOT WORK AT ALL.  Besides, who in the hell has high speed internet and no PC?
  • On Xbox Live, multiple accounts can log in at once.  If I'm playing two player split screen RE5, both of us can log in, get achievements, message our friends, etc.  On the PS3 (with the exception of Little Big Planet), I haven't been able to do that--and even then, I'm not logged in.  It just gives me my trophies when I DO log in later.  My PSN friends don't know I'm online.  I can't access my friends list.  Nothing.  I'm just a guest in somebody else's (usually, my daughter) profile. I play split screen a lot.
  • Messaging:  Yes, you can send your friends messages on PSN.  I can send friends messages and Voice messages on Xbox 360.
  • Friends:  You can see who you've played with on both consoles.  I can REVIEW who I've played with on XBL.  I can prefer somebody if we had fun.  I can block somebody if we didn't have fun.  I can report somebody if they did something I didn't like.
  • Friends Part 2:  I can compare Achievements with a friend without having to manually sync trophies.  I can see what games my friends are playing (like the PSN) but it will actually tell me what's going on in their game.  Instead of it just saying "d21lewis, Little Big Planet", it will say "d21lewis, Madden 2011, fourth quarter, 28-7" or tell what my score is in a game, or how many times I died.
  • Friends Part 3:  I can see my friends' profile.  Not just their avatar pic (and there are hundreds and of avatar pics to choose from--not just a few like the PS3 offers.) but their detailed profile.  You don't just type in a sentence.  You type in a whole profile about yourself (if you want to).  It may include where you live, what you like, or whatever.  Plus, not only can I see my friends list, I can see my Friend's  friends list!!
  • You have Gamer Zones so that if you're just playing for recreation, you can avoid those hardcore types.  If you're a family gamer, you don't have to worry about those crazy users.  If you're really intense, you can play with other intense, professional gamers.  You can pick the kind of gamer you play with.  There's also "TrueSkill" that takes into account how good of a player you are based on the games you've played to match you up against a similarly skilled player.
  • Every single solitary arcade game on Xbox live has a demo.  All of them.  You can try before you buy.  If you like it and buy it, it unlocks instantly.
  • Every single arcade game (and most other games) have leaderboards.  I can see at a glance which one of us is better at HexicHD, Geometry Wars, or whatever when I choose the game.  It's right there on my dashboard.
  • Indy Games and Game Room:  Super cheap games that cost about a dollar.  You talk about your cell phone games and your simple yet addicting games--There's hundreds of them available on XBL!!  And Game Room sucks.....but it has 100% authentic old school games for old school gamers.
  • Videos:  If you buy a movie or a TV show from the PSN and you delete it, it's gone forever.  You just lost your money.  I learned that first hand when I deleted a bunch of movies from my HDD a year ago (even made a thread about it.).  Why did I think I could just re-download my movies?  Because, on Xbox Live, if I buy a movie or a TV show, I can just re-download it for free.  It blew my mind.
  • Cross Game Chat:  Why the hell would I want to talk to somebody not playing the same game as me?  Because they may be on the dashboard trying to get into the same game as I am and I can talk to them as soon as they log in.  Because I may be watching Netflix and they may be playing a new game I want to know about.  Because we're friends and I want to talk to them.  No matter what they're doing on the 360, I can stay in touch with them.
  • Video Content:  You know how the PSN has Qore?  360 has Inside Xbox.  It has Major's Minute.  It has The Kinect Show.  It has IGN Strategize.  It has the OXM (official xbox magazine) report.  It has Xbox 101 (videos about xbox questions).  It also has some Xbox specific programming like The Guild.  It has Internet Videos.  I can watch MSNBC, the Today Show, and the NBC nightly news on my Xbox instantly, in HD, right now.
  • Music Marketplace:  Yeah, I know there's sites on PSN that will let you download illegal MP3's directly to the console.  I've done it.  XBL has music videos, last.fm(as I mentioned before), a gamestore for music games like Rock Band, and Dance Central, top 10 lists, and more.  Plus, with the Xbox (not an Xbox Live feature but I'll toss it in there), any music saved to your HDD can be used to replace the background music in ANY game.  I played Limbo with the Silent Hill 3 soundtrack.  I may put the Super Mario soundtrack that I got with Super Mario 25 Year Anniversary Edition as the bacground to Braid.  It's awesome!
  • Xbox 1 and Xbox 360 games:  Right there, ready for download.  Yeah, there's a few full fledged retail games available for download on the PSN.  There's a TON of full fledged retail games available for download on Xbox Live.
  • Xbox 360 lets you install any games (and there is a performance boost--I have a game that took about 20 seconds to load suddenly load in five seconds when installed--I hate to say it but it was Onechanbara Bikini Samurai squad.....).  Plus, I can download while the console is turned off.  Only PSN Plus users have that option.
  • Gaming with fame:  Almost weekly, there's an event where real stars pick a specific game and play it on Xbox Live.  It's featured on the community calender.  Game developers get into the act, too.  Add them to your friends list before the event and you can play their game with them.  There's also dedicated family nights, specific game nights, ladies night, and stuff like that.
  • Online performance:  This is purely annecdotal but I'll put my hand on the Bible.  I played a ton of games on Xbox Live without a hiccup.  There's been a few times where somebody "got disconnected" when I was winning in SF4 but that's rare.  I have yet to play a game on the PSN (in all honesty, I've only played Super Street Fighter 2 HD, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Little Big Planet 2, Little Big Planet, and Killzone 3) without some major problem connecting, getting disconnected, or some lag.  There's even people on this site who couldn't even play with me for some reason or another.  I don't have that problem with Live.  Maybe it's different for you.  This is my experience.
  • Patches.  Be honest, PSN users.  Patches are a bitch.  Blame it on internet connection or whatever.  My 360 is sitting six inches away from my PS3.  Updates to PS3 games take anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of hours.  360 updates take anywhere from a few seconds to several seconds.  The only time it's taken minutes is when the whole entire dashboard got upgraded.  For this reason alone, I've NEVER played Uncharted 2 and MGS4 online.  I just couldn't wait that long.  When I got LBP GotY Edition, it took HOURS before we could play it.  Same goes for my nephew.  He got Smackdown, Madden, and NBA2K11 for Christmas.  I wanted to help him get the free DLC that came with Smackdown.  We spent half the day updating his console and games.  Tell me this is just us.  This NEVER happens on XBL.
  • When I play on Xbox Live, EVERYBODY seems to be into the game.  We all have headsets.  Both consoles have similar sound quality.  I use a set of Turtle Beach PX21 earphones when I play (highly recommended) for both the PS3 and 360.  Sometimes, when I play on PS3, it seems like I'm the only one with a headset.  It's not a feature of Xbox Live but providing everyone with the means to communicat is a big plus in Xbox Live's cap.
  • Both consoles provide their free content and stuff.  I got the movie Stranger Than Fiction for free from PSN.  I got episodes of South Park for free from XBL.  I got Ragdoll Kung Fu for free from the PSN.  I got Dash of Destruction, Harm's Way, Crash Course, Aegis Wing, Hexic HD, Carcossone, and Undertow for free from XBL.  PSN Plus users can boast a ton of other free content, too.
  • Every single game on Xbox 360 has Achievements.  There's games (like MGS4) for PS3 that don't have trophies.  For that reason, I don't bother with trophies at all.  It just seems like it isn't accurate.

That's it.  I think everything I posted is true. If you see something wrong, tell me and I'll try it on my PS3 (ID: d21lewis).  If I made a mistake somewhere, I'll gladly apologize for it and correct it.  Like I said, both my PS3 and 360 are turned on right now.  I didn't type anything I didn't see.  I don't have PSN , though.

I have a friend named Samuels at work.  He plays PSN.  He could care less about these features.  He just wants to get online and play.  PSN is a good fit for him.  He has a PS3.  I have a friend named Muai.  He plays Street Fighter on a professional level (been in several tournaments).  He owns a PS3 and a 360.  He only plays online games on the 360. I have a hard time finding anybody that owns both that doesn't prefer XBL.  Maybe it's not worth $60 to some people but for me, it definitely is.  My satellite costs me $90 a month.  Netflix costs me $10 a month.  My car costs me $100 in gas a week.  XBL costs $5 a month.  I can deal with that.

Well I guess this means /thread right?

That was just an epic detailed description of both XBL and PSN and I pretty much agree on you on all points (and about the one's in your other post of what PSN does better)

Are you kidding me?  That's like comparing ESPN to public access sports.

Is there any way to replace the OP with d21lewis' Xbox Live breakdown? So many times I've been asked why is it better than PSN and I can never elaborate on "it just is," and now there's a perfectly detailed description for those partial to the Xbox Live service.

All points mentioned come together seamlessly to make it the superior online experience, and well worth the $80 AUD (but really I've never paid more than about $45 AUD plus bonuses). I appreciate your efforts d21lewis.

  • that is a cool feature. but games like resistance 2 allows you to play online co-op with 2 profiles. also (I dont know if you can also do this on xbl) on psn you can create tons of accounts on your ps3 for free, then you can puts any of those accounts on another ps3, and get on the dlc, and add-ons you have. also you can download you games multiple times to any ps3.
  • yes some, but not most take a long time, but that still has to do with how much data is being dowloaded. if you couldnt get on Uncharted online, you must have joined really realy late because uncharted has no install. but it did have several patches and updates since luamch i believe 9 to be exact. so it could of been a substantial amount of data that wasnt downloaded. becuase right now its on v 1.09.
  • also (i must of deleted your comment) you said you can download stuff whie xbox is off, which you can do with psn plus. well, when you are downloading things from psn store, you can select turn off console after download is complete, so that seems like basically the same thing. also with plus, you can select it to download and update you console and all its games automatically, and any time (presumably at times you wont be awake or playing)

but thanks d21lewis. i learned a lot about xbl from you, i still cant say that the stuff you mentioned makes it worth $60 a year, both services are to much the same for me for it to be worth paying, especially when psn is getting Steam

Don't do this.

1.  You force it to go to the real youtube and you can't search videos.  It won't let you press enter.

2.  You can make multiple accounts on one 360.  I can take my memory card to another 360 and play all of my purchased content online.  If I don't have my flash drive, I can recover my ID on any 360 via the internet.  Any new account made gets one month of free Gold Membership.  And while I don't have Resistance, I know from experience that Little Big Planet will let me log in as me but when I press the guide button, none of my stuff is there.  When I do finally play as my real profile, all of the stuff I did as player 2 in someone else's profile loads up.  Basically, is saves my info and ports it later.

3.  Doesn't disprove my statement.  I've downloaded the demo of Star Wars the Force Unleashed on both consoles at the same time.  The PSN version actually downloaded a few seconds faster but after the download, I had to install on the PS3.  The difference was negligable.  Their download speeds are about the same.  PSN's patch speeds are atrocious at times.

4.  Yeah, you can select "turn off console after content is downloaded" but the console is still on!!  Not the same.

5.  I typed that I don't have PSN Plus.  There's a glitch on this site that won't let me type a plus sign.  I'm gonna type five plus signs right now and see if they show up: <<They should be right there.

The difference between PSN and 360 was much bigger a few years ago.  PSN has come a long way.  I can respect that.  And the biggest plus is that PSN is free.  I just think that Live is worth it and that Live is better.  I don't fault anybody for thinking otherwise.  It just comes down to wheter you think Live is $60 better or not.  Both consoles serve their audience very well.

I gotta be honest here.

Anyone who thinks PSN is better than Live is kidding themselves.  PSN is excellent and Plus rocks and the service is more than just ok but its not close to Live.

why?

Faster conncection times.

More stability in online matches.

More exclusive downloadable titles.

Many times early access to DLC add ons

Better Sense of Community.

Easier to navigate and find what your looking for.

And I could go on.  If you would like me to list more I gladly will.  I'm a Plus member even on PSN look at my sig, and I'm not knocking PSN at all.  For a free service its great.  Its just not as good as Live is.

im sorry but a lot of what you said is blatently false.

connection time has nothing to do with psn or xbl, it has to do with ur internet speed and if your hard wired or wifi.

what online matches are more stable on xbl, almost all multiplats have the exact same connect (most are P2P, which uses your own connection, so nothing to do with psn or xbl) and we have already discussed that psn has more dedicated server games.

pretty much the only early access to DLC xbl gets is call of duty, so that point is mute not to mention that has nothing to do with xbl.

better sense of community. a rather ambiguous statement, but i will not argue this one.

very much a matter of opinion. if youre talking about the main menu though, i much much much prefer the xmb (but menus are the online services)

I'm sorry but everything you say is completly biased.

This whole topic is opinion based and straight up in your OP you ask which is better but then trash Xbox Live the entire time.  Your blatent biasedness is getting tireing and I have no problem at all with people haveing a strong opinion on the things they like but I DO have a problem with people making threads whose intentions are more than obvious do to previous posting history.

And I can prove I have PSN Plus and Xbox Live.  I wonder can you prove the same?

dont do what?

i agreed with moost of your stuff, but i just pointed out some of the stuff that i thought wasnt completely accurate or slightly misleading.

3) i now that can be very slow at times (but like i said i think it comes from the size of the dowload) but installing stuff after downloading is always very fast. but like i said psn plus will solve this problem for you (i dont think its a big enough hassle for myself, so i still dont have plus)

4)well i would have to assume that the xbox is still technically on (just in some low power state) to download stuff. but even if it is completely off, it doesnt seem like a benefit compared to on ps3, you press download, then turn off after download. they are both off after the download is complete and u dont have to worry  about doing it youself..

but like i said i learned a lot about xbl, though it did seem like you glossed over many of the positive aspects of psn (though you were praising earlier, so i guess it balances out. lol)

Lets see about this one. Hmm...To view ads on the PSN, you have to hover over the PSN store icon or what's new. It doesn't load until then. There's a difference because xbox live ads take up the bandwidth even if you aren't interested in them. Also PSN is free. A free system is making it optional whereas a premium service is making it mandatory, how amazing.
Yeah, but netflix on the PS3 has better audio quality, and such small integrations in netflix aren't that important to a person who will obviously watch netflix to be entertained and not to watch avatars or talk to your friends. The watch together option is cool though.
You can force youtube to work normally and can see videos easily. If you care.
Resistance 2 has this feature as well.
  • Messaging:  Yes, you can send your friends messages on PSN.  I can send friends messages and Voice messages on Xbox 360.
Yeah ok, voice messaging is a plus for those who use it. I didn't, since there's always text chat.
  • Friends:  You can see who you've played with on both consoles.  I can REVIEW who I've played with on XBL.  I can prefer somebody if we had fun.  I can block somebody if we didn't have fun.  I can report somebody if they did something I didn't like.
All those functions, don't work properly and I expected you to know better d21. Yeah prefer, avoid, as if they ever worked.
Yeah, like its a big deal what a person is doing in game. Really, on which level he is, what he is doing is nothing of use to me. PSN does tell when a person is playing on a particular map though so I can always join him through XMB.
Friends' friends list is a good feature, but profile info is useless. I would rather its not visible to anyone.
Gamer zones? They are just, once again a feature that's a joke. Its just for looking at a profile nothing else. True-skill, again as I said before, is a joke and has to be implemented by the developers themselves.
  • Every single solitary arcade game on Xbox live has a demo.  All of them.  You can try before you buy.  If you like it and buy it, it unlocks instantly.
Something that is mandatory on XBL, and not PSN. PSN is more developer friendly then
  • Every single arcade game (and most other games) have leaderboards.  I can see at a glance which one of us is better at HexicHD, Geometry Wars, or whatever when I choose the game.  It's right there on my dashboard.
Leaderboards are there in PSN games too so I don't see where you are going with this? Its upto the developer.
  • Indy Games and Game Room:  Super cheap games that cost about a dollar.  You talk about your cell phone games and your simple yet addicting games--There's hundreds of them available on XBL!!  And Game Room sucks.....but it has 100% authentic old school games for old school gamers.
Minis and PS one games. And a pentium 4 can play this indie games without any problem so its not much of big deal.
Do the videos cost the same as well? I don't know about this one, its possible that you are right about this.
There is a cross game text chat that supports 16 people and at the max 48 people on PSN. This 48 people text chat is a little different since it consists of 3 text chat rooms, and is helpful for games like MAG. Not all 48 people can talk with each other, but the one who has started the text rooms can talk with each and every one of them. So in a situation you described we won't have a problem on PSN. PS3 supports USB keyboard in game so we can text chat using a cheap keyboard. No need to get an expensive accessory either.
Not in all regions that's for sure. And I can watch all of those on the internets anyway.
PS recently got a Music streaming service which costs $10 / month. If you care. ON the PS3 playing music while playing games isn't exactly possible, but what's the point of it when storing music on the 360 is 10x harder than PS3? I can transfer music from a USB storage, and its one of the reasons why I listen to music more on my PS3.
  • Xbox 1 and Xbox 360 games:  Right there, ready for download.  Yeah, there's a few full fledged retail games available for download on the PSN.  There's a TON of full fledged retail games available for download on Xbox Live.
Yeah games on demand right, you couldn't have picked a worse argument for xbox live. Xbox 1 games however I agree with, they are good. PSN has PSone games, and its picking up the steam on PS3 games as well, Assassins Creed 2, prototype and many other games are being made available for PSN because they now need to be made since they have to offer a new trial every month for PS plus members.
The console isn't actually turned off. And you can do the same on the PS3 for free by "selecting turn the system off when the downloads are completed" option.
What? Know nothing of this, and is completely useless even if true. There are developers playing throughout the world, Naughty dogs played Uncharted for almost 18 hours in an event so its their on PSN as well, its nothing special.
I have already addressed this. Most people don't face this problems unless you are using wireless. I used to use wireless and it used to lag, I changed and it hasn't lagged since.
Yeah patches, the reason for this is not slow PSN more like huge patches. And the reason there are huge patches is because of developers utilising the PSN's strength, no limit on patches. If you have played games like MAG and Heavy Rain you will see that they have huge patches(Heavy Rain 1 GB move patch, MAG is an MMO). Obviously they will take time. Something like this is not possible on the 360.
There are many people who communicate on the PSN. Not as many as XBL but then again with this comes the advantage of not having nearly as many annoying kids online. Yes you can mute, but then again you can join a clan or play with friends.
More freebies are on the PSN. For eg you have free themes, free wallpapers. There are some addons that are free too, and I have never managed to get free add-ons on 360(except for Gears of war). But its comparable in a way if you disregard PS plus.
  • Every single game on Xbox 360 has Achievements.  There's games (like MGS4) for PS3 that don't have trophies.  For that reason, I don't bother with trophies at all.  It just seems like it isn't accurate.
Achievements, trophies, don't mean that much. The no. of PS3 games that don't support trophies are now the minority so it doesn't matter that much to me, however a game like MGS 4 should have had trophies I guess.

I wonder can you prove the same?

um, ive never claimed to have live.

nothing i said in response to what you said was untrue or biased. you should watch the call of duty video that someone posted, online games play the same accross both networks.

and in the OP i clearly asked what are you guys opinions, and then said heres my opinion why I think psn is better.

can i not give my opinions on the matter?
