How the hell would this work for current install base? Do we need to buy upgraded hardware or a new drive??

if you need a new drive,MS will upgrade to blu-ray,not still using DVD...
Cool.
Current maximum is 7.30GB I think (with the system update on every disc) and now >8GB is quite good.
Btw. many games don't even fill up the 7.30GB (or come close to it).
Crysis 2 for example is only 5GB, Fallout New Vegas under 5GB, Assassin's Creed 2 4.5GB etc.
Not to mention that these games also offer multiple languages, but notice how every one of them use in-game cutscenes.
Its not suprising that Microsoft would want to release a new disk format. Cut down piracy and make developers happy. Also if the 360 is going to really be around till 2015 then they will need a new format. Nintendo is bound to release a platform next year. Microsoft would be stupid not to try and improve their console as much as possible!

They will not change the drive. That would be way too costly and would split the userbase even further. Imagine games coming out only for those who have the new drive. that would be suicide.
Making the drive read another layer of DVD's, however, would be very possible.
Sony could do the same with their PS3's, making the drive read more layers of a Blu-Ray, however, nobody needed that as of now, 50GB is more than enough.
Just 1 GB more is a bit dissapointing, though. By today's standards, that is really low.

I don't know where got that from, but all 3 games are well over 6.5 GB big. Most games are actually scratching at the limit.

Earlier today, Microsoft’s Major Nelson let Xbox 360 owners know that Microsoft is currently looking for several thousand beta testers to test out the new system update and partake in a beta test of a new disc format that the system will soon take advantage of. Limited to residents of the United States, Microsoft will send all that are chosen to partake in the betat a copy of Halo: Reach, which will come on the new disc format. Microsoft has already dismissed claims of the new format being Bluray, but a hacker is claiming to know the secrets of the update and has revealed what he knows. According to his information, Microsoft will release a new DVD model known as XGD3. This will allow for additional storage space and other fine upgrades over the current DVD model they are using.
“MS will introduce xgd3 – this will add more ap checks, cvi (content integrity) checks, increase the disc size and adds a new layer for protection issues – all in the 20500 sdk! bring it on!” This information hasn’t been confirmed and should be taken as a rumor until confirmed by Microsoft. http://www.examiner.com/video-game-in-national/xbox-360-system-update-new-feature-dvd-format-xgd3-claims-hacker

and where do YOU got that from ?
don't forget that all Xbox 360 games are filled with a bunch of useless data until they reach 7.30GB.
I can't post the source since it would violate our forum rules.
But you'll get the same effect by copying these games to your 360 harddrive:
However different results depending on your region and therefore the languages used on the disc.

Maybe devs can take notes from Crytek, Bungie and start using realtime cutscenes instead of CGI.
