Forums - Nintendo - Ubisoft: 3DS Will Turn Casuals Into Early Adopters

source

Generally, the launch of a new console is met with fervent game players standing in line to be the first to purchase the new device.  Murray Pannell, Ubisoft’s U.K. marketing manager, believes that the Nintendo 3DS launch could turn this classic scene on its head.

"Instinctively, it’s easy to assume that the hardcore gamer will be the early adopter to new hardware, and inevitably this will be the case to some extent," Pannell said to MCV.

"But when you consider that millions of consumers have already bought into the DS console family, it’s not difficult to believe that the broader audiences will come quickly to the new 3DS. As such, our PR and marketing approach will reflect the fact that we need to cater for all audiences – both core and mainstream."

Ubisoft is pushing ha rd on Nintendo’s new portable with four launch titles for the system in North America: Asphalt 3D, Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars, Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D and Rayman 3D.  Pannell believes that Nintendo is doing well on its pledge to support third parties better for this portable generation.

"There is always an expectation that first party will spend large, but in the case of 3DS I genuinely believe that Nintendo will be focusing on ensuring that the overall 3DS platform is a success," he said.  "So assuming that does happen, then it makes the job of attaching more of our games to the install base so much easier."

Hardcore hating 3DS may be because they have to fight with teh casualz for the console?

Considering Nintendog's and Layton's sales in Japan, they may have a point.

It was marketed to the Brain Age generation in Europe. Sort of like how Pokemon is fairly hardcore but is also open to casuals.

I love how UbiSoft supports every Nintendo console right out of the gate. They did with GBA, DS, Wii, 3DS. Sure their is always a port or two but a few origional titles as well. I think honestly Nintendo is making casual's hardcore. Today I saw an elderly woman buying a 3DS which she had pre-ordered, I'm not sure if it was a gift but I thought it was interesting none the less.

I will support Ubisoft by buying Shadow Wars. When I get around to buying a 3DS anyways.

They do have a lot of releases but only a few are worth the full price tag, IMO.

Expect a crap load of petz games coming soon.

I hate how Ubisoft uses the terms "core" and "casual" like they're actual proper terms that suddenly appeared in the last 5 years, and they're not exactly seperate anymore anyway. If they really are seperate things why do shooters have easy modes, and why do mature games get made for Iphone?

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

shadow wars is a really great game and looks to be the best launch title to me. It's encourgaing to see ubisoft offering a range of software for 3DS so early on. gives my hope that the assasin's creed game may actually have effort put into it
