I think it's a great policy. People here in America having 20 kids so they can get more money from welfare.

Or get their own reality show.

Octomom didn't want that, or at least she regrets it. She just wants to live normally, or so she claimed on her last interview on Oprah like a week ago

What, are you part of her fanclub? Will you release a YouTube video titled "Leave Octomom alone!".

Let's be honest now, if it weren't for that reality show how exactly would she have managed to raise 8 children???

Judaism condems sex for non-reproductive purposes too (Onan, and other things from the Bible), and I'm pretty sure Islam is no different.

Actually, no. Muslims are encouraged to engage in sex often (after marriage) not only for reproduction, but also for enjoyment (no ban on contraceptives).

Most people's ideas abour sex in Islam stem from the middle eastern countries which practice sex only when the intention is to conceive a child. This is a cultural phenomenon, not a religious one.

Out of curiosity does this imply between married couples, or can men only do this (including with women who are not their wives)?

And these practices usually are cultural, but religion and culture often interwine.

Yes, only with your spouse(s). Adultery is a sin which is viewed quite harshly, for both sexes.

And yes, religion and culture do tend to overlap, but in many instances, Middle Eastern practices have become synonymous with Islam, to the point where these practices are assumed to be a part of the religion (which then causes people like Joelcool7 to refer to my entire religion as an "extremist group").

I'm with whoever said 2 children per couple is a good limit.

Something definitely needs to be done and if we lower the overall population the economy will actually greatly improve because there will be less people unemployed or needing welfare.

Well, FTR lots of cultural practices have essentially become synonimous with religion over here in Romania (like wedding rituals, rituals when someone dies, honoring the dead etc.), even though they're not actually mentioned in any religious texts and practiced in other countries who practice the same religion. These things tend happen.

As for the sex in Islam thing, I thought that in more traditional societies it's impossible for a man to commit adultery, unless he has sex with a married woman, thus commiting adultery against her husband (you can only commit adultery against men). Of course I don't know much about Islam, so I can't say for certain.

Also, from what I know Abrahambic religions see sex as something dirty and impure. I read somehwere that in Islam, when a male ejaculates he needs to go through several rituals to become pure again, as sperm is viewed as impure. In other words, Abrahamic have a very sex negative attitude (as opposed to religions like hindusim, where sex is viewed as something that uplifts people), so I find it odd that you say that Islam encourages sex often. Also, does this sex have to be for reproductive puropses only?

Nope, men are bound by the same restrictions - only engage in sex with your wife (however, a man is able to have up to 4 wives, which does allow more sexual freedom, but only for the man). And adultery is what the word translates to roughly (I think the arabic word is "zinnah,") but it does refer to extramarital sex, for both a man and a woman.

Sex itself isn't really seen as impure or dirty, if it's between married people. In fact it's encouraged, and not only for the sake of conceiving a child (for instance contraceptives are allowed in Islam). Sex is described as something that helps a marriage as it brings the husband and wife closer together. There's times of engaging in sex and types of sex that are dirty/impure/prohibited. Pre-marital sex, sex when a woman is experiencing her period, anal sex, and homsexual sex are some that come to mind offhand.

Sperm is an impure fluid, and the man does have to re-purify himself, but it's not really a series of rituals, it's tantamount to taking a shower.

And I didn't know that hinduism is very pro-sex, but I find it odd that India is very...conserved when it comes sex, when hinduism is the dominant religion. I wonder what accounts for that?

No, and i'll grant it could have been a stunt, but you have to imagine that all that attention could be damaging

Hinduism is as vastly diverse as Christianity, all concentrated in that one country. The anti-sex divisions must be in control legislatively, as opposed to the group that, say, composed the kama sutra

Well they did write the Kama Sutra, no? The Christian British had a negative influence on their society in that regard. Open attitudes towards sex were also present in Japan (they had sex toys like dildos in the 16th century), and they too sadly were negatively influenced by European Christians (and Americans).
