Higher capacity battery with a flip open or clip cover for easy battery changes would have made this a non-issue.
It's one of those reasons why the only people who complain about PSP battery life either:
A) Don't actually own one; just like to complain.
B) Own one but haven't figured out that the little plastic cover on the back contains a battery that can be swapped out
C) Own one, have located the battery cover but are too stubborn to buy an extra battery yet insist they should be able to play for 10 hours straight on a single charge because portable gaming is "what I do."
The only reason why it's an issue with the 3DS is because quite frankly, battery power has never been an issue before with any of Nintendo's handhelds.
I'm sure some peripheral company will sell a higher cap battery and maybe even a replacement battery cover that doesn't need a screwdriver and four screws to remove. Actually had one of those for the GBA (used a thumbscrew to secure the cover) and it worked well.
