Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft should sell Rare to Nintendo

So far Rare's contributions to the Microsoft's games consoles have been a mixed bag. Most like Kameo don't seem to fit the system. Games like Perfect Dark sell ok but really aren't on par with similar games on the system. Yes there have been some excellent ones like Viva Pinatas but as much as Microsoft is pushing it to get casuals on their system it isn't happening. Early on Microsoft needed assistance from a house like Rare but they are successful now. They would be better off buying exclusives or more content. The GTAIV exclusive content deal is a great example.

Mass Effect is an excellent title for the 360. Unfortunately BioWare was snapped up by EA meaning any sequels will not necessarily be exclusive. I think the 360 fans would much rather have those than Banjo Kazooie 3. Rare has a lot of properties that aren't going to do Microsoft any good like Killer Instinct. On a system that gets Street Fighter, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, and Dead or Alive is Killer Instinct 3 going to do anything for them?

Nintendo on the other hand could really use a good fighter like KI, and would sell millions more of BK3. They are flush with cash right now and could bring back some great titles on the VC like Goldeneye. They could restart Donkey Kong Country and Blast Corps.

Why would Microsoft do this? They have already said it. They are not really competing with Nintendo. Microsoft has gone after the core gamers who love FPS, Racing, and Sports. Rare games are only hurting their image and making them more like Sony. They should not try to be everything to everyone that will let Sony come back.

So I say embrace the Wii60. Keep focus on what is working and go after the hardcore. Leave the casual to Nintendo, and make some coin while you are at it.

Final* Word on Game Delays:

The game will not be any better or include more content then planned. Any commnets that say so are just PR hogwash to make you feel better for having to wait.

Delays are due to lack of proper resources, skill, or adequate planning by the developer.

Do be thankful that they have enough respect for you to delay the game and maintain its intended level of quality.

Im willing to bet that if BK 3 is on the xbox 360 it will be a suckfest.

I wish it went to the wii not because I want it or anything but because the game would be MILLIONS of times better than on the xbox 360 simply because of the develoeprs.

They can sell there properties to Nintendo. But themselves no thank you.

Not really sure, but wasn't Nintendo much more hands on with Rare? I got the impression MSFT was a bit more hands off. I agree with the suggestion though. Not sure they could get back what they put into it though.

I think Nintendo should sell out to Microsoft and then release the Wii60 for world domination.

You know Rare isn't the reason why Nintendo isn't bringing out the James bond game right? It's actually that another company holds the rights to James Bond videogames. Otherwise we'd probably see it on the Xbox360 at the very least updated a bit with some online functionality..

Rare hasn't been an impressive developer for a long long time.  Nintendo likely made the right decision dumping it.

Viva Pinata is about the best thing Rare has done since Goldeneye 007 and right now Microsoft's lineup needs that diversity more than Nintendo does.

"Hey Nintendo, Remember when we bought Rare off you? well... That really backfired... Would you like to buy them back off us?"

Oh yeah, Nintendo would love to do that.

As for the argument of Rare's games not fitting on the Demographic of the 360, that's the whole point. A successful console appeals to all demographics. Infact I'm willing to bet that Microsoft would rather Rare make games like Viva that sell moderately well as opposed to games like Halo that sell very well.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

Rare was only partially owned by Nintendo. They had no choice in letting Mircosoft over pay. But what they paid is irrelevant. What matters is value. Being that MS was willing to let Bungie leave I am guessing they are putting serious thought into how they want their developers to line up for the next console. Are they going to waste their time money and effort with Rare as a second party or would someone else better fill that role?

MS has seemingly unlimited money but they do want to turn a profit. If ongoing costs for a project don't make it worthwhile dump it.
