Forums - Gaming - The single player experience.

There's plenty of great single-player games out there.  Sure, some games will focus more on multiplayer - there's a market for that.  But, as these games are expensive to maintain, only games that expect to attract a large audience (and a DLC-buying/subscription-paying audience) can go that route.  As some titles find success, others will try to emulate that.  These economic factors will probably force some games to go back to a single-player focused experience, but there will always be companies trying to get on the action.  Don't worry - single player games aren't going anywhere.  Where there's a market, there's a product.

Single player is the most enjoyable part of game for me. Some of the best single player experiences this gen :

- Metal Gear Solid 4
- Uncharted 2
- Super Mario Galaxy 2

No particular order.

Who's the best Pac, Nas, and Big. Just leave it to that.

PLAYSTATION®3 is the future.....NOW.......B_E_L_I_E_V_E

Slaughterhouse Is The Sh*t  .... NOW ........ B_E_L_I_E_V_E

Thanks for all your responses.  Reading them, I realize that their is still a lot of good single player games out there, Uncharted seemingly being one of the best (I don't have a PS3, but the coming of THe Last Gardian might change that).

What is making me uneasy, is the fact that the developpers put multiplayer in games that were successfull as a single player experience.  I especially think about Dead Space 2 and AC: Brotherhood.  For now, the multiplayer aspect of the games didn't take anything out of the single campaign, but it worries me.  I hope they don't "cut" the story line so every game that comes out will have a 4 hours campaign with a 2 hours coop mode only (as in the last Splinter Cell).

The length of a game does matter to me.  I at least want 8 to 10 hours so I can really feel immersed in the world, story and characters.  I like to take my time.  I was so hyped for Force Unleased 2...you know the rest.

Anyway, we will see.
I am now replaying Enslaved: Odyssey to the West for the second time.  It is still amazing.  This is really my kind of game.

anyone downplaying Bioshock 2 needs to do their research. the Multi and SP were made by two completly different devs. hell they werent even in the same country. So no time was taking from the SP experience. I think thats the way it should be done. The fact is Bioshock 2 story was never going to be as popular as the 1 was. 1 was too damn good. And 2's SP is still better than 99% of the FPSs out there

Well that was clearly aimed at me....

I used Bioshock 2 as an example of a series declining in quality that just happened to coincide with the addition of a MP mode. I'm well aware it was developed by two different teams, so the SP team wouldn't have lost any time (but the budget would have been affected, and as you'll obviously have noted, I did quite clearly state that such things could take time and money away from the SP). It was just the first example of a series going backwards due to that happy coincidence that popped into my mind, it did not mean I was stating that that is exactly what happened with Bioshock. It was a generic point aimed at the industry as a whole, which I then partially applied to the series...

I could have used Batman: Arkham City seeing as the developer has repeatedly admitted that the addition of multiplayer would diminish the SP experience... And that would also be one of the games that my other point referred to, as I've lost count of the number of opinion pieces I've read demanding MP be added to it.

@pots55  i see where your coming from, and I used to think the same thing. Uncharted 2 changed that. ND managed to TOP the SP of the original AND throw in a MP that was fun, IMO. IMHO i think if you have a good dev, you can have your cake and eat it too. Not all devs can be as badass as ND and get away with it. Some might just suck, im not hearing good things about DS2 multi but AC:Brotherhood multi i heard is really good. that might be the game to finally make me plunge into that series. I think its the FPSs that are suffering, campaigns are getting shorter and emphasis on Multi is getting bigger, i blame that on the media and gamers who keep buying the CODs.

@milkyjoe  ok, noted. I wouldnt go so far as to say the quality of the series dropped. its only two games in. and the 2nd wasnt even done by the original team, but i see what your saying even though i dont exactly agree. IMO i think some devs can do it and some cant. Rocksteady made a great game and they said multi would take away from SP. Just because they cant do it that doesnt mean it cant be done. ND's Uncharted prove that. but kudos to Rocksteady for not trying to jam something in they know wont work. Im greedy, i want my cake and i want to eadt it too. If a dev can give me a MP mode that doesnt sacrifice the SP, then bring it on.

That's right! The R&C games are great single player experiences. Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One looks to be a great coop/singleplayer game.
