Earthquake happened at like 3:30PM Friday on the 11th in Japan. So most of the sales for last week had already happened. Including a rather interesting new release that boosted sales particularly on day of release. That wont be the case going forward. |
Unless the Fukushima situation escalates there's no way sales will suffer this badly.
First bigger part of Japan wasn't affected so badly. Second once affected people go back to living normal lives they are going to need replacement for destroyed property.
There will be 4-8 weeks of sales drought but after that sales will start returning.

Yet all the other consoles dropped pretty dramatically |
PS3 was only one with a signifigant release. Not to mention PS3 already YoY lower in Japan.
Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Like pretty much all consoles, what's your point? |
PS3 was already trending lower, so my prediction of lower isnt just the Earthquake/Tsunami/partial meltdown. And for people saying well people are going to run out and repurchase all thier stuff, video game consoles will be much further down the list. People will want homes and cars first.

They won't buy empty homes though, will they? |
I think that the video game console will be pretty far down the list of what they put in the home. For christ sakes this was no ordinary event and people think that a couple of months from now all the people will be rushing out and simply replacing video game consoles. If this was my country when I wasnt putting my own life back together I would be out helping my fellow countrymen not looking to play video games.

The last part of the chart makes no sense ps3 beat the 360 over the last 12 but not 9 6 or 3 isn't the last 9 6 and 3 part of the 12 so does Sony just insanely outsell 360 at one part of the year or something
BTW, do this again in April. You'll probably notice that the average outsell rate for the past 3 months will be much, much more steeply in PS3's favor. Probably comfortably over 100k per month. And that's during a time frame when we've been hearing the 'statistical tie' term thrown around almost to the point of ridiculousness.
One word, Holidays, this Kinect thing looks to be the next Wii like sensation, i predict that any gap PS3 closes this year wont be big enough to not be blown out of the water come christmas by Kinect, unless sorcery turns out to be awesome and starts selling Move like crazy its the only logical conclusion.

My money is on kinect running out of steam 6 months into the year at most end of the year I really can't see kinect going for 5
