It did it in a 8 week period beginning 11/24/03. The PS2's sales were definitely not as well sustained as the DS, though, which is why the DS will surpass it.
On an unrelated 360/PS3/PS2 note, look at this chart of weekly sales:
They're tracking very similarly.

They're tracking very similarly THIS YEAR. That's an awful thing for the PS3 and 360. They can't sell more than a 7 year old console.

That's barely 7 million consoles. Nowhere near 10 million. The PS2 has never come close to 10 million in 8 weeks.

The post i quoted asked what the fastest a PS2 ever sold 7 million was. The 10 million question was someone else.
I guess the bottom line is that the PS2 was never the sales monster that the DS is, despite DS shortages.
ds and playstation are Different...beasts all together
potential owner of the Ds is every individual person...
potential for a Console - TYPICALLY is 1 maybe 2 consoles per dwelling...
DS is going to destroy the ps2 sales record..potential number of owners is easily 5x what the ps2 had...
GOO. DS is jsut a monster. It really does print money. This would be quite an amazing feat if it does it.

Things weren't always this way for the DS either.
Just remember that the library is always increasing, they still haven't released colors, and haven't done any price cuts (most of the PS2 adopters came after it was under $200), etc... There are still a lot moves that they haven't had to make, but obviously they will eventually.

The Wii has a shot to Sell more than the PS2's 1.7(I think this is the record Reggie was talking about)
I predict 1.65 but it could be 2 mil, just depend on Europe's supply.
