Thanks.

So was that rendered in real time or pre-rendered?

I hope next gen will look that good.

It was all real-time rendering which makes that tech demo even more jaw dropping.  Epic proved it by pausing it moving the camera around freely, turning off things like shaders and stuff in real time to show the differences with it on and off and other stuff like that.  Needless to say if games look this incredible while I'm playing them next-gen i will be MORE than happy because there hasn't ever been a game released with this level of graphics in game before FOR SURE.

That tech demo was running on three GTX 580 cards. Next gen consoles will not have anywere close that much power.

I read in neogaf that they say that Epic believes they can get the same tech demo runing on a single GTX 580 if they optimized it.

This demo was probably run at a very high res, like 2560x1600 or even higher... consoles will probably use something like 1920x1080 or lower... so they'd need something less powerfull than a GTX 580 to run this... And next gen will probably arrive in 2012-first half of 2013 so there'll be better video cards with less power consumption by that time.

I'd say next gen consoles will use something between an HD 6870 and an HD 6950 and they'll be able to run this (at a lower res) with little heat and low power consumption.

No, it's going to be much more powerful than that.

Back in Nov 2005 Microsoft came out with with a console which had a GPU almost 80% as fast as Nvidias 7800GTX which was released only 5 months before it (in June the same year).

The 6950 is already 3 months old and not even the most powerful GPU out there, and next console gen is still far away.

No they wont. These new high end cards simply use too much power and are too hot. Situation will not change in two years that much because process shrinks have slowed down a lot compared to past and there really isnt other viable solutions to reduce power usage that much. Even this gen MS had huge problems with heat and it costed them a lot of money (RROD). Not to mention that Nintendo showed how little graphics matter to customers in the end so I doubt that MS and Sony will enter in new graphics war again like they did this gen.

Yes I think they will.

The Radeon 6970 (which is only 20% slower than the fastest card today, the GTX580) uses 210W at maximum load. A Geforce 7800 GTX and a Radeon 1900 XT (which the PS3 and X360 GPUs are based on, respectively), used roughly 150W. That's not a huge increase in power consumption in 5 years.

It is a problem but can it be overcome.

And the GPU temperatures in today's cards are actually the same as they were in GPUs in 2005.

Around the Network

That was Epic.

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

Next gen shouldnt come, the costs will be insane.

Anyone remember Dark Sector? No?

Well that is what is going to be remembered of this new game that Epic is showing off in about 5 years.

It's real time and it's running on 3 GTX 580 but they say they can get it running on just 1 if they optimized it.

For those who want to download the tech demo:

EDIT: Don't think it's for running the tech demo on your PC, it's just a good quality video of the tech demo.

A banner stolen from some site xD
