Sony's plan to usurp 3DS with their PSP2 revealed

Sony FTW! 185 69.55%

Nintendo is d0med 81 30.45%

Total:266

With recent comments directly coming from Sony confirming that PSP2 power lies between PSP and PS3, their plan to overtake 3DS is clear.

Let's take a look at some various facts including the PSP vs. DS era.

We know that DS overtake PSP because of the following:

- 2 screens

- touch screen

Now, we look at known differences for where 3DS has advantages over PSP2:

- 2 screens

- 3D glasses display

We know that PSP2 will have more features than the 3DS except the 2 major weaknesses above.

So, if Sony can remove those weaknesses, they surely will trump the 3DS.

PSP2 comes with touch screen, but not it also take it up a notch with multi-touch.

It even comes with back/side touch features. We can say that PSP2 is truly quite touchy.

But it still doesn't come with 2 screens like the 3/DS, its major weakness.

As hinted by what they recently said, the PSP2 is really a combination of PSP and PS3.

Now, imagine you using the PSP2 as the controller and the TV as your second screen.

Technically, the PSP2 screen does what the bottom screen of the DS does while the TV is what the top screen of the DS does.

But how would you connect the TV to the PSP2, you'd ask.
Worry not. By the time the PSP2 release, we'll be seeing wireless enabled TV massly produced especially by Sony.

Not only can you buy the PSP2, you can also grab a 50'' wireless TV to go with your PSP2. (You can buy a 24'' version if portability is your thing.)

But, you'd say, the 3DS will have the advantage of backward compatibility.

This advantage is neutralized since the PSP2 will be more than powerful enough to emulate all existing DS games since it's now a dual screens.

But, what about 3D?

That too, is easily covered by the Sony's wireless glassesless 3D TV.

With that said, the PSP2 is, in every possible way, overpowering the puny 3DS.

it makes perfect sense*

Not having double screens can't be seen as a weakness. It's not like it's the standard.  NGP does not need it, by the looks of things.  NGP's biggest wildacard is meaningful support, it needs core titles plus crap like Nintendogs.  Little Deviants seems to be one of thier aces by the looks of things....

And price, but I think it'll be not too bad.

so you can play psp2 games in 3d if you carry around with you a tv? lol.

Being in 3rd place never felt so good

calling your TV your second screen sounds surprisingly not mobile.  so while it cool to be able to easily display your NGP display on your TV no game is going to use that set up in their game design...

so here is what i think....i've got 23 DS games.  in my experience TWEWY is really the only game i have where i would say the second screen is required (as in the game couldn't possibly work without two screens).  every other game i've play the second screen was used in a very limited fashion to either:

  1. display of various menu items (something i don't think will hurt the NGP, home consoles have worked just fine with only one screen and menus)
  2. simply serves as an touch input control (which the NGP now has on the rear)

now i'm not sure that rear input will be as easy to use as a front input but we'll see i guess.  however, with the NGP being a multi-screen (front and back), multi-touch, pressure-sensitive interface i would say NGP has the advantage here.

You forgot to mention the NGP has no Stylus* That is a big one in terms of gameplay mechanics that devs would consider.

Yup, Little Deviants sure does look like crap. You've got a point there.

Lol sorry bout that.  Slips out sometimes.  I meant not for me.

But lack of stylus and no second screen are tremendous ADVANTAGES for the NGP as they are detriments on the DS.

why does everyone think that more is better.  so what if ds and 3ds have two screens, that doesnt necessarily make them better.  sometimes less is more.  besides that, all i have to say is uncharted portable > any other portable game
