The best way to look at a game library's quality

Count Everything (Table "A") 35 38.46%

Just Count Exclusives (Table "B") 17 18.68%

As Long As I Get the Games I Wanna Play! 39 42.86%

Total:91

"Exclusive" doesn't really mean anything if you don't like the game.  Look at the games you like.

I'm in the just play the games camp, but if you need to compare - for example because you can only afford one console then I'd look at the exclusives as the rest of the library would, in theory, be available no matter what choice was made.

Which is understandable but sometimes, there's games that are available on two platforms (360 & PC or 360 & PS3 or in rarer cases, PS3 & PC) that may not make one platform look stronger and unique but does make the outcast platform look weaker.

If you really want such a simplictic look on the matter, count even non-exclusive games and then see how what the differences between platforms are.

The best way is just making a list of all the games you are interested in and see if you can come up with enough games to justify the purchase.

Buying a console because it has all these high rated exclusives might give you bragging rights but doesn't guarantee that you will end up happy.

Simplified on purpose for the point of illustration, Zkuq.  We know that differences between platform, controller preference, console features, online quality, price, downloadables, and things like that all make a difference in our opinions of platform preference.

Plus, how many games does the average gamer actually buy?  I buy games like a maniac but I still only own a miniscule percent of a game console's library.  In the end, does it really matter if Console A has 150 (hypothetical number, btw) exclusives and highly rated games and Console B has 94 exclusives, when in the end you only buy 7 exclusives and 20 multi-plats?

Yes of course it matters... it matters which of the exclusives are more important to you.

Hence my own belief that the Wii library is still superior to PS3 and X360 put together, even if the Wii is now getting jack shit for the future (I have seriously struggled to think of a 5th game for the Most Wanted thread the past couple of months... I think the Grinder is my current choice but unless it really turns out well I doubt I will actually be buying it).

In terms of a console purchase for someone like me who can't afford more than 1 (I think my total spenditure on gaming this gen is about £800*, had I bought 2 of the consoles at launch I would have very little, if any left for games at all) You of course look at the whole library of games, it's usually quite easy to prioritise a few games over others and choose the console which matches them best... generally this would be because of a favoured exclusive library.

* I just worked it out to be £980 on hardware and games give or take £10..... then take off £50 if you want to discount gifts (including free Wii points from stars) and/or add on £25 if you want to include rechargable batteries and an SD card (which were mostly used for the Wii)

Obviously!  That's why it irks me so much when people use games that they don't like, won't buy, or aren't even interested in to prove an arguement.  In the end, it just comes to which game or selection of games makes you happy.  If you never play or never intended to play an exclusive game, what's the significance of it to you?

£980 ?? HOw many games is this?

eg comparing that to Australia they automatically approx 2.5x the price haha. So about $2500AUS worth of stuff.

So for me:

Wii here cost me $400. Extra controllers nun chuck and wond about $100 each x 2 = $200. Approximately 65 games @ average price of $80 (includes guitar hero etcc type games with addons) = $5200 => Wii Total = $5800

PS3 = $700 30 games (includes limited edition stuff $200 dollar packages) @ $90 avg = $2700 => PS3 Total = $3400

XBOX360 Elite Halo Edition = $499 and about 10 games @ $50 average (most are from other people) = $500 => 360 Total = $1000

So grand total = $10200AUD approximately.

So for about £3500 can you get the same or more if shopping smartly?

Yah but I just go by what I want to play - I don't worry about titles I have no interest in or how a platform might generically appear.  So for me the equation goes:

1 - which multi titles do I want that would be available to me no matter what my choice?

2 - which titles do I want that I need a specific platform for?

For each platform you'd end up with a total list of games you want and can chose from there.

I have all three consoles now so I never really think about it at all anymore, but early on when I decided I wouldn't get two HD consoles - boy did that resolution stick - I used the above to determine that, in terms of games I wanted, the PS3 library was better for me.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
