Forums - General - Rootkit - what is it and why should I care?

source

A rootkit is software that enables continued privileged access to a computer while actively hiding its presence from administrators by subverting standard operating system functionality or other applications. The term rootkit is a concatenation of "root" (the traditional name of the privileged account on Unix operating systems) and the word "kit" (which refers to the software components that implement the tool). The term "rootkit" has negative connotations through its association with malware.[1]

Maybe he belonged here at one time, but Sony is stealing exclusives left and right these days. First it was Mass Effect. Now it's Galaki. Next... Gears of War! Mwahaha!

Right, but how many people are going to read and actually retain that information?

I'm assuming everyone that reads this and doesn't already know what a rootkit is, is just going to assume it's bad and go on about with their lives.

Hooray for Galaki for trying to inform us but the thread is pretty pointless as is...

They are recording what Blue Ray Porn movies you watch.

They probably won't use it in court against you though.

I'd be more worried someone else finds out because they get ahold of your completeley unencrypted data.

Though, Sony doesn't need a Rootkit for that.   They're been doing it since launch.

Also, Sony has been able to force you to activate code since... 2006.

Sony didn't JUST install a rootkit.  It's been their since 2006!

It's just... nobody cared because nobody could do anything with their PS3s.
