Sony Preparing Hack-Proof PS3 SKU?

With all the recent price drops circulating Sony’s PlayStation 3 console and even reports suggesting the company may even introduce an official price drop, you can’t help wonder why Sony are really doing this for. If they really wanted to drop the price of their machine the best opportunity would have been at E3 last year. So, there must be a motive behind the recent price drops from major retailers – Sony are reportedly looking into a hack-proof PS3 SKU.

According to what I have been told by an anonymous source Sony are already deep into plans of developing a hack-proof PS3 system. This is mainly due to the recent leaks of Killzone 3 which has worried Sony of their console becoming a mainstream threat to piracy.

The hack-proof SKU will be a slim PlayStation 3 model and will contain a 300GB hard drive as an incentive to purchase the hack-proof system – the price of the SKU will be £186.99, my source informs me. The scheduled launch is unsure at this time due to Sony seeing if they can win the battle in the courts against the root of all the PS3 hacks – George Hotz.

Sony is essentially trying to get rid of all the old SKUs with these price drops – and even their own price drop incoming possibly – so it makes way for their new hack-proof model.

Don´t make sense... hack proff? What is hack proff?  I doubt they will launch something with that purpose, I bet they will launch a new SKU with cheaper tech...

PSN: franco-br
MGS4, GH, MW2, GT5p, WipeoutHD, etc..etc..

Yes, they are always looking for new ways to make their console hanck-proof, this is nothing new and never will be. That doesn't mean they are going to do really soon, but I think they want to bring the most safe/hack-free console they can the fastest way possible.

I thought the first PS3 was hack-proof.

They should work on PS4 security at this point. Even if they release this "hack proof" PS3 by years end there will be 50 odd million PS3's that are "hack friendly."

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

The PS3 was already hackproof, until it wasn't.

Besides, it won't make much difference anyways. There are so many units out there that it's not hard to find an older unit, even if they made a new one. Take a look at the PSP-3000, did that make a dent in piracy? Doubtful.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

Why would they lower the price of the older models? If they were to release a new SKU with increased security, the best thing to do would be to make the two as interchangeable as possible on the shelves until the new ones are completely phased in, as to make it harder for potential hackers to spot the weaker SKU.

At any rate, what others have said is true, there are 50 million hackable PS3s out there, and it has probably reached 60-70% of its lifetime sales... a new SKU with extra security would be null and void, at this point, particularly if the only thing it does is new security... if they whack some new features in there, it would be more effective, but only slightly.

Nothing is ever truly "hack proof". The best you can get it making it really, really difficult to hack by shifting encryption quick enough between cycles before it can be deciphered.

What I'd like to see is how it would be achieved. I can't think of any way to make a re-iteration of the PS3 hack proof while the master key is about. If anything, it would invalidate all PS3 software currently on the shelves.

Sony really should have silently brought fixes in, instead of boasting about it. There's nothing more rewarding to hackers than hacking a console that somebody dubs "hack proof".

Historically, with a new model comes a new feature for Sony to axe. What will it be?

My monies  on playing games.

I think this is getting blown out of proportion.  Everytime Sony has come out with a new iteration of their HW for the PS1 and PS2 they changed the HW layout slightly to improve security and make it more difficult to play pirated games.  And I highly doubt that Sony would/will be calling this hack-proof.  Well, unless they encase it in a steel enclosure that has been welded shut, then have the electronics exposed so when you try to tourch your way through the enclosure it melts them.
