Forums - Gaming - What happens if the FPS genre crashes the way music games have?

I don't think it will die, but it will severly drop in popularity somewhen.  I just hope that it is sooner rather than later

I think as anything gets more popular, whether a genre or a game franchise, that entity starts to give in more and more to said fanbase.  When that happens is when elements die off from an artform, becaue they become so unreachable except by those who are hardcore fans that they lose their place in the mainstream.

I mean just think about it.  Halo 1 CE is a great game.  The Halo franchise in general is a fairly simple shooter, but clearly it was even simpler back when the first one came out.  It's gotten more complex because that's the natural evolution of anything is it grows a specialized fan base.  What I'm saying is eventually by catering to the fans, it will cut itself off from the somewhat more casual players.

I'd even look at the already simple 2d mario platformers as a good example of that.  They all got more and more complex (first game was maaaad simple even if hard) and it was what the fans wanted at first.  Then it alienated fans.  nsmbw is the latest throwback to being one of the more simple 2d mario games and it was very un-alienable to consumers.

It's just natural that FPS will die down one day.  I think the most realistic offshoots like CoD and MoH will suffer most.

Music games were destined to die since they were a fad. The FPS genre is a staple and almost a symbol of videogaming, don't expect it to go anywhere.

^^^It won't go anywhere far, just like 2d platforming.  It had a period where it died out for a long while.  Platforming is just as much a staple of videogaming as FPS.  But the FPS we see today are not the simple ones like back in the first days of Doom and Quake.

IMO if FPS games are crashing, it's because the whole industry is crashing.

If the FPS genre dies, that means I win.

I don't see it happening anytime soon. My bet is the entire industry would fall dramatically if the FPS genre fell.

Nintendo would probably make it through the FPS decline and maybe Sony but I gotta think Microsoft will take a huge hit since they rely on Halo, Gears and 3rd party games (Call of Duty, Battlefield, etc.).

Maybe if they die you'll see a return to the classic arcade style shoot em ups.

Not going to happen. I think as long as there are conflicts in the world, and the long ass history of conflicts we'll continue to see plenty-a-FPS games coming out for the next few decades. The genre is just too extensive and fuelled by the desire to fire a gun and to be the "Hero" as is the case in most FPS games. You'll end up killing a shitload of bad guys, you get the chick, you fornicate, your son is born, he goes off to fight more enemies, he gets a hot chick, they fornicate, then his son goes off etc etc.

So far famous conflicts that FPS genres have touched upon -

Vietnam(Not as much as the others though), Modern, WW1(Not so much), WW2 and maybe a few odd gulf wars. Overall I'd say there is much live left in there, including WW1 and Vietnam. WW2 has been done to shit though >:
