I don't think it will die, but it will severly drop in popularity somewhen.  I just hope that it is sooner rather than later

Based on what?

I think as anything gets more popular, whether a genre or a game franchise, that entity starts to give in more and more to said fanbase.  When that happens is when elements die off from an artform, becaue they become so unreachable except by those who are hardcore fans that they lose their place in the mainstream.

I mean just think about it.  Halo 1 CE is a great game.  The Halo franchise in general is a fairly simple shooter, but clearly it was even simpler back when the first one came out.  It's gotten more complex because that's the natural evolution of anything is it grows a specialized fan base.  What I'm saying is eventually by catering to the fans, it will cut itself off from the somewhat more casual players.

I'd even look at the already simple 2d mario platformers as a good example of that.  They all got more and more complex (first game was maaaad simple even if hard) and it was what the fans wanted at first.  Then it alienated fans.  nsmbw is the latest throwback to being one of the more simple 2d mario games and it was very un-alienable to consumers.

It's just natural that FPS will die down one day.  I think the most realistic offshoots like CoD and MoH will suffer most.
