I am in agreement that it would be difficult to catch up in 2008 since I can't imagine MS will just keep the prices the way it is in 2008.  If they dropped it to $199 then this console race will really get interesting. 

And for those who says blueray and graphics are everything... well Wii and PS2 have none of those and they are still selling more than PS3!

PS3 is selling more than ps2.

PS3 might pass 360 but not in 2008 and maybe not even 2009. But it does have a chance to pass 360 in lifetime sales.

Wii came out at the same time as PS3 and it has sold 10m more than Ps3. I expected PS3 to pass 360 by now, but it hasn't. Either people are under appreciating the 360 or too optimistic about PS3 - no real solid reason to believe buyer's love for PS3 - except for BR. I know at least 5 people who bought PS3 for BR.
Also, Microsoft blew it this Christmas too - there seems to have been a shortage for 360 - the 360 pro was sold out in many places.

It doesn't matter that much if PS3 beats 360 or not. The three consoles are here to stay.

I don't think PS3 won't pass Xbox360 in 2008. However, it will close the gap significantly and pass the 360 somewhere in march/april 2009.

I believe that the PS3 will outsell the Xbox 360 in early '09. And Lifetime sales gab will be 5-10 million or less.

2008 is an obvious impossibility, which was obvious even before the elegant coffin nail Bodhesatva kindly provided. 2009 is not particularly likely BUT POSSIBLE. I am convinced that PS3 sales will either drop to a relatively high plateau or rebound early in the year for LBP and MGS4. Developers have stopped fleeing the system already unless I am mistaken (and I could be).

The PS3 will seriously gain ground on the 360 unless (until) MS drops the price, in which case it will gain ground slowly or very slowly. I'm going with first half of 2010 for PS3 to pass 360, but clearly that's mere speculation at this point. I'm not crazzy.

OMG!!!! OMG!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!!!! PS3 has SURPASSED my sales expectaions of 8.7 million before the new year. And by quite a margin even.....DAMN - close to 9 million with 8.86 million sold????? PS3 is here to stay and there is NO QUESTION now for me that it will surpass the Xbox 360, and most-likely as soon as in late 2008.

Man, these numbers have made me SO HAPPY. I thought I went a bit too high LMAO as many seemed to post 8.5 million figures.

 

GO SONY! GO SONY GO SONY! :))

 

The naysayers have NOTHING to talk about now. If you have someway to criticize these numbers then it's obvious you just want to talk bad of PS3, because many said it wouldn't surpass 7.5 million. Wow....**rollseyes**



End of Year predictions:

Wii | 17.5 million ----> 19.20 million as of new year

X360 | 16 million ----> 16.02 million as of new year

PS3 | 8.7 million -----> 8.86 million as of new year

DAMNN I really underestimated the freaking Wii - Sheaaat! 

 

Lifetime Sales

Wii | 60-80 million

X360 | 50-60 million

PS3 | 100+ million (I believe the PS3 will still be around when other NEW consoles arrive...there won't be a PS4 for quite some time.)
