It's actually impossible NGP will cost less than 300$, and since the PSP is significantly cheaper than that, it was obvious they would have never discontinued it. But, since PSP is selling not that good, things will get worse after 3DS and NGP launch, so don't expect many units sold in 2012...

Well dropping the PSP to $100 and the PSP Go to $125 would do wonders in keeping it around. Sony could also start pushing the Go more, since it's in a similar situation as the NGP will be. They both don't play UMD's.

...really? No backwards compatability?

Also, agreed. There needs to be compelling games to push it, and for me, the connectivity isn't doing it for me. And when it's likely to be $100 higher than its rival at launch, when its rival has 3D, a name behind it and time on the market to grab early adopters, it's once again looking uphill for Sony :/

Besides digital and other content saved to your Memory Stick, then no it doesn't. Of course over the last year I've purchased about 95% of my games from the PStore. So it wouldn't bother me to much. I'll still have my PSP-2000 around if I want to play any of my 50 to 60 games on UMD.

I was actually thinking about buying a Go over the holiday season, but wanted to wait to see if Sony was going to officially announce the PSP2.

Oh, that's...a shame

Good job you waited then

Well I may still get one, since everything I do currently on my PSP-2000 is digital. Crimson Gem Saga, Cladun and Patapon 2 are my current games, I also play alot of Minis (I'm PlayStation Plus).

But I will keep my 2000 for the UMD's or trade it towards a 3000 and get the Go.

Well now that I think about it, the NGP will play PSP games through the PlayStation Store, so no real reason to get one, except to say I have one and that would be a waste.

It depends really what they choose to do, we know too little about the NGP to say this.

I just want a system that is powerful and makes Nintendo look like their stuck in 1983,NGP does that for me and I would pay up to £400 for it,I paid £500 for my PS3 with added insurance and what not,I don't understand how people can buy into the 3D without glasses,I'm sure it looks impressive but no where near as impressive as the 3D on PS3.

I'll be getting both the Xperia Play and the NGP and I'll probably pick up a PSP-3000 and PSPgo when they come down in price.

Playstation gaming for 18 years this 2012

I think I've got a pretty good idea of what Sony will do. Still in the beginning of my process. Can't say what it is, for fear of the potential consequences. But I've got a great understanding of Sony.

Wonders? I don't think the PSP can have a 10 m year even with what you say (which could drastically reduce Sony's profits, and since there'll be a PS3 price cut and they want to sell NGP at loss...). The PSPhone could do relatively better if marketed well.

CURRENTLY PLAYING: Xenoblade (Wii), Super mario 3D land (3DS), Guild Wars (PC)

Sony cut the price of the PS2 and PS3 the same year they launched the Go. So it's a possible. Even if the hardware profits go down, they still have game sales at retail and the PlayStation Store to generate money from.

The NGP will be a money generating powerhouse after a year or two. There isn't much Sony needs to worry about. The PS2 is pure profit and the PSP should be there or pretty close. The PS3 has hit profit and the PSN is expected to hit profit this year as well. Which if Sony ramps up game releases on there (which they will have to for the NGP) that will be easy.

The only problems Sony would need to worry about is if the PSP completely bottoms out (falls below 40k units a week WW) and if Sony can't secure more major exclusives past 2011.

The PS3 price drop will likely happen around the time of another redesign. Something that would lower the cost anyways, plus block any hacking from going on (since Sony should know by now of the only reason the PS3 was hacked in the first place)

I can see that working in Japan where PSP is very much alive and kicking, but the rest of the world is a different story.

I can't imagine western retailers supporting the PSP at all. The PSP is already in the back corners of most stores already and software sales is practically non-existant.

The PS2 OTOH was selling boatloads of software even after the PS3 was launched.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

My guess is this isn't actually what Sony plan to do, but it sells more PSPs then saying 'yeah we're gonna shaft all the PSP owners in 8 months, they're idiots for buying one now'.

It's just to make sure anyone who reads the article isn't put off buying a PSP.
