Will 3DS Top PS2's North American First Day Sales Record?

Yes 100 55.56%

No 80 44.44%

Total:180

$250 Million in 2000 equates to $336 Million in todays money. So it's gonna have to sell a shitload to beat that.

Its a hard feet since some ppl are already predicting shortages of the system for quite some time

I see it being possible, retailers are suggesting that pre-orders are higher than those for the Wii already, which is always a good sign!

It all comes down to whether Nintendo give the stock, if so, then, well, it'll be a close one

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Wow, so Wii didn't beat PS2 American launch?  I know they both sold out and I would have thought all those extras Wiimotes and nunchuks would have made the difference :P

Good points, Rol.  If they can indeed sell even close to 1m day one, they've probably got it in the bag.  However if it doesn't sell out immediately and it's dependant upon software to make up the difference, that's the wild card.

Nintendogs/Cats and Street Fighter will likely be the biggest sellers, and neither of those will sell units on day one like a new SMB would.

Eh, the 3DS pretty much needs an attach rate of two games per system, so having one game that overshadows everything wouldn't necessarily be all that beneficial. Oddly enough it could be counterproductive as more people would just buy that one must have game instead of picking up two semi-big games in an attempt to "justify" their hardware purchase.

You all are aware of how 'big' Nintendogs was with the casual crowd? It surpassed 20 million, do NOT underestimate its power. But then again we are talking about day one, and I doubt casuals buy systems day one o_0.

What software will be available day one though?

Wii beat the PS2 in unit total sold but because PS2 cost an extra $50 more per unit, it had the higher gross revenue.

Your @bolded answered your post; that's exactly what I meant.  Nintendogs is a "legs" game.  Four little legs, in fact, that will keep on walking for millions and millions of units.  And while I think it'll do great on day one, it won't do what Mario or Zelda would for 3DS' launch.  But like Rol stated, one game that overshadows everything else could very well be counterproductive to moving quantity...  unless some people buy the unit by itself initially just for the built-in games (which are supposed to be pretty cool) while they wait for something else.

I don't think they've announced the "official" NA launch lineup yet.  Nintendogs and Street Fighter are very likely (whereas Layton will take a while to translate), but we know that Ocarina and SMB definitely won't be there.

There won't be enough to go around.

Now that we know that 400k units (the entire stock) sold on day 1 in Japan, and that many more would have sold had they been available, I have little doubt that North America will mirror that mentality.

According to reports, NA will have access to about 1.6m before the end of March, and with 3DS launching on March 27th one could assume that all (or at least most) will be available on launch day.

Should be interesting...

Well, 6 hours now EST from the US launch.  We know more details now including Japan's launch numbers and the fact that NOA has officially stated that, like the UK, 3DS pre-orders for NA are twice that of the Wii.

What I find most interesting though pertaining to this thread is this:

http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/85147/3ds-preorder-numbers-doubled-the-wiis-preorders/

With 1.2m pre-orders between Europe and NA, and with 200,000 looking likely for yesterday's UK launch (weekend), one could derive that about 1m of those pre-orders are for NA.  Considering that all Nintendo would have to sell to match Sony's first day sales record is 1m systems (at $250 each), it's quite likely that 3DS' full category launch in NA (games, accessories, etc) will exceed the $250m launch record held by the Playstation 2.

I'm sure that Nintendo will make an official announcement soon regarding the launch day numbers, but we could have a new record holder here in the US, folks!  Until then, everyone enjoy their 3DS!
