Sony's consumer device unit hasn't been doing that great and the motion pictures unit hasn't been much of a money maker either, so it's not like blu-ray is a big cash cow or you would see these divisions doing much better.

Blu ray has nothing to do with the gaming division

Then tell that to the people who posted above.

I meant finnacially, as in their not the division that gets the profits even if they cause the sales

The profits would be in the consumer device or motion picture units. Neither of these units are making huge profits.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

figure out how much royalties ps3 gets per sale of a blu ray and times that by every blu ray movie sold and every 3rd party ps3 games sold, personally I think it's significant, after that you have to figure out how much of that is fair to give to ps3 (all of the ps3 games of course and maybe half the movies)

Profits would show someplace on the financial reports. None of these divisions are making gangbuster profits. Profits show on financial reports, its that simple. If something is making a ton of money, it will show on the financial reports. You can't just make some hokey assumptions on how much you think something will make. You have to look at the results.

Too many variables in the results to draw any specific conclusions

Not really, big profits will show. Smaller profits will not.

unless the profits were offset by something see variables

in the longer run the losses taken on ps3 may benefit sony. I say sony will get the losses back after 10 years? maybe 20?

In order of biggest losses it's:

PS3 #1, Xbox #2, Xbox 360 #3.

Those are the numbers I recall if you add up the profit and loss as best as possible over the years of each console.

Xbox 360 is actually only like $650 million in the hole to date, if you just assume X360 P&L=the division it's in P&L (since obviously only MS knows the exact 360 numbers). So probably within a year Xbox 360 project as a whole will be in the black.

Probably PS3, they were making a loss for too long on the PS3 to make it back now.

Both will be very successful financially, just the 360 more so IMO

PS3 won't make back its massive losses ever, 360 will.

I wouldn't say that. Both will make money for the company, when we add SW such as Rathcet And Clank, GT5 to the mix, as well as Move etc.

360 will undeniably be miles ahead, yes. But Sony will have money back when you add all these factors together than if they flat out decided not to make the console in the first place

How big were the 360 losses anyway?

LOL oh man xD you're making me laugh today I'll give you that. You're making an opinion without knowing the figures!

PS3 has lost Sony 5 billion, and that's assuming PSP and PS2 has made no money since 2005. Like someone else said PS3 losses are likely in the 6 - 7 billion range, something Sony will NEVER make back from the PS3, Move and its SW.

360 has lost MS $750 up to now, and they made $600 mill profit last Q ... so they most definitly WILL make money on the 360.

Did you forget the 1 billion in RROD repairs? You seem to have forgotten them
