I think they figured that having a blue top-screen would kill your eyes while trying to view the 3D effect.

I'm not going to be getting a 3DS right at launch, but I personally prefer the black version. The two-tone looks too tacky. If it were red and black two-tone, it would be better. Blue is just...Cheap looking.

But to be completely honest, I'm underwhelmed with the aesthetic design of the 3DS in general. It looks mismatched. Then again, I'm still playing DS on the good ol' silver DS Phat :P

The frame, around the screen for the 3D effect, is already black, therefore a black console fits more in line with the design of the 3D screen itself.

To enhance the color effects in the 3D screen apparently. Theres less "noise" from a pure black background, so the 3D effect, and its detailed color, etc, is enhanced slightly. It was a similar decision to why the 3D screen isn't touch compatable.

I don't know but I think the black 3DS looks too plain. However, to each their own I say. If you like the black one then buy the black one and vice versa for the blue one :).
