Forums - Sales - Wii momentum. Gone forever?

Looking at recent sales numbers many think that wii is slowing and will continue into decline. That's what everyone keeps saying anyway but, what makes it seem like something is that people say nothing can get wii monentum back and people think that wii sales are going down for no reason. I say the reason sales go down is because the games went down. When wii entered 2010 wii fit plus, wii sports resort and mario bros wii were all selling systems.

Now wii is entering 2011 with no big system seller (Donkey kong and just dance 2 are but not huge. If we were to combine them  they barely reach one of the 3 games total at that time.)

Now what can be done? Well if making motion based titles made the wii huge than actually making motion based games will make the system sell again. I think the way to solve the problem is to make motion plus titles to make wii sell systems .

Funny thing too is that these this statement makes it seem like they are heading into this direction
We'll have to wait til E3 to see what nintendo will do.

IGN: “No problem. Now that you’ve established the next handheld generation, where do you see the Wii in, say, two years?”

Miyamoto: “I’m sure we’ll continue to see the Wii platform evolve, as it has over the years. Obviously our focus right now is on the Wii MotionPlus, and how we’re able to create gameplay with it that is very intuitive. So I think that we’ll continue to do that over the next couple of years. But that’s really all I can say about what’s coming.”

Till the holidays yeah.

Wii is doing just fine. It could have done even better, but it can sell another 40-70M, depending on how much effort Ninty is willing to put into it and how long it's willing to keep it alive (possibly also after Wii2 release). Every product has a descending phase of its sales curve, Wii's one is not dropping too fast and Nintendo still has possible moves to play to further slow the fall or even give it some rises.

I personally wish devs gave the Wii more 3rd party multiplats it deserves.

I think the Wii's momentum as you refer to it, is gone for good. Now thats not to say the Wii is doomed, rather that it is impossible for Wii to regain its past momentum. The past momentum was caused because the Wii was something new that couldn't be found on any of the competitors consoles.

These unique experiances (WiiSports,WiiFit,MarioKart) gave the consumer something new each year pretty much, all this stuff found only on the Wii. 2010 was the year of the hardcore for Wii Nintendo decided to bring gamers classic gaming experiances. This was both a great and horrible decision.

It was great because Donkey Kong and Kirby fans have been waiting a generation for a great game. Other Nintendo loyal fans were waiting as well. The release of these games gave the hardcore and fanboyish consumers something to appease them. Nintendo was giving their core demographic (Nintendo fans) what they wanted for some time.

The negative, Nintendo fans and core consumers already owned Wii's. This means that the titles did not shift nearly as much hardware as say Vitality Sensor could have. Nintendo lost sales momentum faster then ever in the past because lets face it the casuals and non-gamers are Nintendo's biggest market.

Now can Nintendo regain its former momentum? No. Nintendo has been loosing momentum for the last two years. The only way I think Nintendo could regain its former momentum would be to appeal to all consumers.

What does Nintendo need to do to regain its former momentum this holiday season?

A major price cut to 99USD. StarFox, F-Zero , Kirby and Zelda to keep the core demographics happy and also get a boost in hardcore hardware sales. Then Vitality Sensor asap to give gamers yet another new experiance. If all these things were done this holiday season I think Nintendo could temporarily regain its momentum.

But that would be a miracle and I don't think Nintendo will do that. Thus I think Wii is bound to loose momentum at a slow and steady rate till the next gen begins.

The problem with this is that January 2010 was also significantly down from 2009.  I think 2009 was up on 2008, but that is more due to the severe supply issues they had back then.  2008 also had an insane April-June quarter thanks to Wii Fit and Mario Kart, and I'd assume they held some supply from the first three months to save for these releases.

Considering that last year there were 3 big games and a price cut, and that this year there were no big games and no price cut, I would say momentum has maintained itself fairly well. Even with Microsoft and Sony bursting onto the scene with motion controls and slimmer consoles, Nintendo still won last year when it came to overall sales.

Certainly they will be making efforts to maintain and increase Wii's momentum throughout the year. They will likely have new motion-plus software not limited to Zelda. I think Wii Relax will be released at some point this year and that, like Brain Age and Wii Fit, it's going to push hardware as it attempts to expand the gaming audience.

They also have the option of a price cut which they could do at any point in the year. I believe at a price point of 130-150 dollars sales would start to explode again. They also have the option of different colors and bundles. The red wii bundled with mario was extremely successful and I wouldn't be surprised if they brought it back.

The other option is that they could simply update the Wii hardware in the same way Sony and Microsoft did (not changing the internal specs, but simply changing the look or external functionalities). I don't think this option is very likely, but if it did happen I wouldn't doubt it's ability to boost sales back to astronomical levels.

Lastly, the one positive thing that I think we saw this last holiday season was the stronger sales for third-party games. Nobody has been talking about it, but there were a number of big third party games that did quite well. Companies like Ubisoft and THQ must be having a change of heart towards the Wii, and I think we may see 3rd parties finally start to break down and actually make some good content this year.

So a simple rundown:

1. More motion plus software (Zelda, Wii Sports 3?)

2. Wii Relax and Vitality Sensor

3. Price cut to $130-150.

4. New colors, new bundles. (green with Zelda?)

5. Bring back red mario bundle.

6. Wii hardware update (not graphical)

7. More third party support, hopefully...
