I think the Wii's momentum as you refer to it, is gone for good. Now thats not to say the Wii is doomed, rather that it is impossible for Wii to regain its past momentum. The past momentum was caused because the Wii was something new that couldn't be found on any of the competitors consoles.

These unique experiances (WiiSports,WiiFit,MarioKart) gave the consumer something new each year pretty much, all this stuff found only on the Wii. 2010 was the year of the hardcore for Wii Nintendo decided to bring gamers classic gaming experiances. This was both a great and horrible decision.

It was great because Donkey Kong and Kirby fans have been waiting a generation for a great game. Other Nintendo loyal fans were waiting as well. The release of these games gave the hardcore and fanboyish consumers something to appease them. Nintendo was giving their core demographic (Nintendo fans) what they wanted for some time.

The negative, Nintendo fans and core consumers already owned Wii's. This means that the titles did not shift nearly as much hardware as say Vitality Sensor could have. Nintendo lost sales momentum faster then ever in the past because lets face it the casuals and non-gamers are Nintendo's biggest market.

Now can Nintendo regain its former momentum? No. Nintendo has been loosing momentum for the last two years. The only way I think Nintendo could regain its former momentum would be to appeal to all consumers.

What does Nintendo need to do to regain its former momentum this holiday season?

A major price cut to 99USD. StarFox, F-Zero , Kirby and Zelda to keep the core demographics happy and also get a boost in hardcore hardware sales. Then Vitality Sensor asap to give gamers yet another new experiance. If all these things were done this holiday season I think Nintendo could temporarily regain its momentum.

But that would be a miracle and I don't think Nintendo will do that. Thus I think Wii is bound to loose momentum at a slow and steady rate till the next gen begins.
