Forums - Nintendo - Could New Super Mario Bros be presented in layers?

Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto has talked alot about how he wants to use the 3D features of 3DS to add depth to the Mario games depth that would not have been done on any prior platform. This got me wondering I use Photoshop and programs with several layers in my pictures.

Of course we know that in a platformer their is going to be layers. Like the ForeGround is going to pop out in front of the back ground. But what if Nintendo ads two or three layers inbetween the foreground and back ground. Layers which Mario could traverse?

Imagine running along and seeing an enemy up ahead, instead of battling him you step aside and let him walk past. Or theirs a box in your way so you walk around it. Or your out with Yoshi and jump into a bush to avoid a goomba patrol. What about a question block that is further towards the background and you need to walk towards it in a different layer.

Anybody understand what I'm getting at. Imagine enemies walking towards you from the background. You could fit multiple goombas into one space. Now of course I bet if Nintendo adds layers to New Super Mario Bros it'll probably just be one. But can you imagine playing a New Super Mario Bros game with several layers? Making a 2D sidescroller 3D.

Could this be what Miyamoto has been hinting at when he has talked about the 3DS creating depth? Finally their could be depth in 2D games, this could revolutionalize 2D. Though I must say Paper Mario is already alot like this and it is on its way to 3DS also up until now we haven't had 3D which would make layering platformers so much better.

If it's a straight up 2d platformer like New Super Mario Bros was (you can't see the ground as it's perfectly flat), then trying to add some kind of depth to that would probably get confusing and make the game overly chaotic.

If it's 2.5D (slight perspective on the ground), like for example the 2d segments in SMG2 or Donkey Kong Country Returns, then I could see the player being able to navigate up and down almost like they would in a classic arcade brawler.

Still, I personally would prefer it to be a straight up 2d platfomer with any 3d effects not tampering with the perfection of 2d Mario's gameplay.



 

do you mean layers like in lbp, If you do that wouldnt be much fun in Mario, its not fun on the badly done LBP levels where you just avoid stuff so cant see it working here.



I understand exactly what you mean by "layers." By the layers you mean the foreground being the 3D closest to your eyes, the middle ground the one behind it, and the background the one on the screen. Just thinking about it makes me nauseated.

Well thats the only thing that would make sense if Miyamoto plans to add depth to 2D Mario. Welcome to 3D, the world of gaming will forever be changed.

Not exactly what I was thinking when I said layers. I meant using the 2D perspective with layers. Example Little Big Planet. However unlike Little Big Planet it could be done way better by utalizing 3D. You could jump into bushes or slip around Koopa's. It would add depth that Miyamoto was talking about while giving consumers a familiar 2D format.

He could use the Super Paper Mario format as well mixing Galaxy with NewSuperMarioBros, I wouldn't mind that infact it would really show off the hardware.
