Forums - Sales - Square Enix sales slide 28%

Last year was SE's best year ever in terms of revenue and profit, so it's amazing this year has held up so well baring in mind what they released.

Great, they deserve that.

Until they change Square-Enix back to the old glory and fire Wada, I hope this will continue.

updated: 14.01.2012

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

No wonder with the games they're popping out lately.

"And yet, I've realized that maybe living a "decent" life means you won't ever have a "good" life."

I get the feeling that FFXIV's failure is just going to continue to hemorrhage their money. Deus Ex isn't going to save them and I seriously think FFXIII-2 is going to underperform (as well as The 3rd Birthday). Their lack of talent or quality is no longer a secret and probably the only other title they have coming up that I think will perform well at least critically is Tactics Ogre. Other than that I see NOTHING doing well.

Mindjack to the rescue!

They haven't had much luck recently, but I see it turning around soon.

"Responding to intensifying competition in the console game market, the company has implemented organizational changes in the third quarter while also working to better select and further strengthen our most competitive titles," Wada said.

In other words:

"All that sells is Final Fantasy. We expect to announce the following titles at TGS:"

  • Final Fantasy 15
  • Final Fantasy 15-2
  • Final Fantasy 16
  • Final Fantasy: Dating Sim
  • Final Fantasy: Kingdom Hearts: loneliness (plus) alienation (plus) fear (plus) despair (plus) self-worth ÷ mockery ÷ condemnation ÷ misunderstanding x guilt x shame x failure x judgment n=y
  • Final Fantasy: Dragon Quest 11

"At present, we also have no further news on either Final Fantasy 13-2 or Final Fantasy Versus 13."

...that's about all I expect of S-E these days...

EDIT: Damned plus signs...

I dont think Deus Ex will save them either, but their doing the right thing which is investing in their western assests. the Tomb Raider reboot looks promising, Deus Ex i think will turn out to be a popular game - like a modern day film noir version of Bioshock. and theres still the western developed Fortress project that could turn out well. and i think they will release a HD collection for FF and Tomb Raider, which might help them a bit in the short run.

so i think the western studios will do well, its the Japanese studios that are causing problems. simply because of the allocation of resources (5 years for 1 game) and for some reason the very poor IPs (Infinite Undiscovery, etc).  imo Tactics Ogre is swimming against the tides sadly, because its on PSP, with the PSP2 already announced and its a hardcore game i think.

I can't see Fortress making back its budget due to its, at best, messy dev cycle (and that's if it ever gets released). And the thing is 90% of the problems are on the SQUARE side of things, not Enix. Say what you will about Dragon Quest and tri-Ace, they've never really changed their attitude of how they do things. Even the Western side of things isn't immune to garbage, look at Kane and Lynch. Deus Ex and TO are the only things I find interesting. Right now FFXIV is STILL bleeding cash and none of Square's other projects look good. At all.
