505 Games has today officially announced the first game to release in its partnership with Michael Phelps, Michael Phelps – Push the Limit. Promising to be one of the most realistic and intense sports simulation videogames ever, coming to Kinect for Xbox 360 in June 2011.

Players will take a competitive sports journey with one of the most celebrated athletes in history throughMichael Phelps – Push the Limit, the first controller-free swimming experience to capture your true movements and translate them into accurate gameplay. The game, developed by Blitz Games, puts you in complete control of an up-and-coming swimmer entering the exciting and gruelling world of competitive swimming in the hope of taking down Michael Phelps.

Push the Limit is a fun, innovative, and physical way to game that is complete with elements that will challenge serious gamers, swimmers and casual fans,” said Phelps. “I’m really excited to help bring a one-of-a-kind swimming videogame to the market that is reflective of my competitive nature and passion for swimming. This definitely isn’t your typical videogame; much like my training in the pool, Push the Limit is about improving and mastering every race element - from controlling your adrenaline on the block to perfectly timing your finish. In my world, it takes a lifetime of dedication to get one-hundredth of a second ahead and I believe Push the Limitoffers players a unique journey inside swimming that will challenge themselves as much as their in-game competitors.”

Check out Michael Phelps – Push the Limit in the first game trailer which can be viewed atwww.michaelphelpsgame.com. The trailer was filmed on location at Loyola University Maryland in Phelps’ hometown of Baltimore and features the first time he has been captured utilizing the innovative Phantom HD, a high-speed camera that is often used for movies and sports to garner the visual quality of high-definition imaging with frame rates up to 1000 per second to capture incredible detail.

“It is an honour for myself and everyone here at 505 to work with Michael Phelps, a truly transcendent athlete who has brought unprecedented glory to competitive swimming,” said Ian Howe, President of 505 Games. “His guidance and feedback have proven invaluable to the development process, and in-game he will mentor players in their journey from an unknown challenger to a powerful swimmer capable of beating the best in the world.”

505 Games also supports the Michael Phelps Foundation and its efforts to help grow the sport of swimming and encourage active lives, especially for children. Electronic Theatre will keep you updated with all the latest details on Michael Phelps – Push the Limit, and other forthcoming videogames from 505 Games.

Hmmm, I think I'll pass on this one. I don't see it being very good I'm afraid, but I could be wrong.

This was known about since October.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

If this involves lying flat on your coffee table and mining the crawl I'm out!

Otherwise colour me curious how this will work.  As a - fairly - regular swimmer I doubt I'd want to trade an actual pool for this but I'm tres curious how the controls are going to work.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

LOOK! I'm swimming in the air!!!!!  :-O

...Kinect jumping the shark already?

Stwike him, Centuwion. Stwike him vewy wuffly! (Pontius Pilate, "Life of Brian")

sounds creative and unique. Just what kinect needs. i'm sure haters will still hate and try to derail this thread. I wonder exactly how it will work. Are the olympics coming up? I'm sure it would sell better with Phelps name in the headlines again. I wonder how it will control, or what the exact object will be. Swimming is one of the best workouts there is and can really shpe your back muscles so I might pick this up if it is good. Too bad the video does not show more game play.

Agreed.  This would be pretty pointless using any other interface.  Still won't be easy for them to pull off, but it's good to see appropriate ideas coming to Kinect so early.  Bodes well for the future.

Meh,  I though this would be another Michael Patcher article. I'm disapointed.

Above: still the best game of the year.

Swimming is one of the best workouts because it's a full body workout where you're suspended in water which is about 777 times as dense as air. Mimicking swiming motions in air completely defeats the workout part of the game.

It can be useful to teach you how to do different strokes correctly.

I'll be in my pool by June anyway, teaching my son how to swim.

If it give me a swimmer's V line body I'm all in!
