But Koontz writes contemporary novels too, right?
@super_etocoon: Eddings is great fun, easier to read and plain satiric in his pen! Redemption of Althalus is perhaps the funniest book I've ever read!
Too bad his wife died some time ago though, they wrote a lot together.

My personal favourite is Raymond E. Feist. I laugh at some of the "fresh" authors in the genre, like Christopher Paolini. He should have a category on his own; "Thesaurus-riddled Plagiarism"

Did you hear about how he burned down his garage and his office that contained many of the original manuscripts? The picture of him in his bath robe explaining to firefighters what happened is priceless.

How did I miss that?! Damn, have a link to the story?

I'm trying to get published myself, I have ideas and notes for 7-8 series now... Have been working on one for a few years, building the world and society, flora and fauna etc. A lot of work indeed. Book one will be finished sometime next year, I really hope the publisher approves!

I write novels in my native tongue, but I love english and I use it for every short story I write, even in the same universe as the stories in norwegian.

There's the link....and the photo.

Truly priceless! And the grin on the firemans face really says it all... Eddings is a strange character.

Tolkien of course is great and so is C.S. Lewis. I have been reading the Wheel of Time series over the past year. 6 books into that because I haven't much time to read but I'm going to be getting the next two for christmas. I'm so glad that Robert Jordan's widow found someone to finish up the series.

She did? Who? He seemed intent on finishing the series, and she'd know a lot about it having been his manager and biggest fan throughout!

Yea his name is Brandon Sanderson, TOR announced he would finish them up almost 2 weeks ago actually.  She said she enjoyed his Mistbon Series.  Anyone ever read any of those because if hes gonna finish the series up I wanna know how he writes.

Hi, this is Vince with Shamwow.

love reading fantasy and some sci-fi, not the hardcore sci-fi books, i just read Poison and The Haunting Of Alaizabel Cray by Chris Wooding. He is a great writer and his stories are so original. My favorite series of right now is Scott Westerfields Midnighters series. A sci-fi/fantasy twist to or world its a great trilogy. I also love the Rangers Apprentice books by John Flanagan. I just love fantasy. Oh yah and i also read the golden compass series which was very good

I've read loads of Fantasy and Sci-fi over the years, but my writing never gets past the outline stage.

Fantasy

Robert Jorden - The Wheel of time (waiting for the last book)
JRR Tolkin The Lord of the Rings (+ other stories)
David Eddings (and wife) - pretty much everything
Elizabeth Haydon - The Symphony of Ages(parts 1 and 2)
Frank Herbert -Dune series
C.S. Lewis - Narnia (my favourite when I was young)
Terry Brooks - Shannara series, The magic kingdom of Landover
Robin Hobb - The Farseer Trilogy, The Liveship Traders Trilogy, (and much more)
Anne McCaffrey - (many)
JK rowling - Harry potter series
George RR Martin - Song of Ice & Fire
Tad Williams - Other world (a great & unique series)
Tracy Hickman & Margaret Weis - Dragonlance series

I'm planning to read some of the authors you guys have mentioned.

I read far more Sci-fi both hard and.... casual(??)

I at one pointed wanted to be a fantasy writer, but, well, I'm a terrible writer. I actually consider myself pretty similar to Tolkien: awesome story teller, terrible writer.

That can be fixed.  You can't train a poor story teller to be a good story teller, but you can train a poor writer to be a good writer, technically.   It happened for me strickly by a chance encounter with someone with a fiction editing background who refused to give up on my writing skills.   But that's a story outside the scope of this site.

I enjoy reading and writing fantasy.

I've written a young readers fantasy novel. Some of my favorites include C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, say what you will but I also enjoyed J.K. Rowling, and I'm reading some older ones now, like The Princess Bride, The Neverending Story, and shortly I'll be reading C.S. Lewis's Sci-Fi Fantasy Trilogy.

Shannara series is really solid, Dragonlance is a classical one! One of my friends has EVERY DL book! Over 300 now I'm sure... I've read 4-5 of the series in Dragonlance myself, mostly about the original companions; Tanis and co.

so Mummelmann and anyone else who is writing a book, tell as about your Novel. Whats the storyline, characters, setting etc.
