It would if retailers had been sitting on stock

Sony and MS have full access to all the market research firms info...they pay for it.Besdes they have internal data.
With only 1.8 million, plus existing stock in europe and japan....the wii can do good numbers selling old stock in japan and EU but not so much in stocless USA.

What market research firm are they paying for weekly info? Or were you just making a meaningless point?

WHAAAT, PS3 outsold Wii? Damn, stupid constrained supply ... U'r losing money and potential buyers here Nintendo...!

DS though, sickening!

Wii rainchecks wont be counted as units sold for December. At Gamestop it's going to be the same thing as taking a reserve, but just paying it off in full. The Wii SKU and serial number need to be scanned for it to count as a sale in the GS computer

ah, the explosion will be counted towards next weeks numbers will they? That's good to know. But damn, what a lull this week.

Retailers are withholding units in an effort to increase business.  Lots of Wii = lots of business, gauranteed.

Ioi commented on this already in the "Holy crap" thread that this week did not include the surge and he is already estimating Wii numbers for next week at around 700k.

Bingo.  Nintendo held back shipments this week for the huge blitz on Sunday (16th).

@fkusumot: Just because NPD doesn't release weekly data publicly doesn't mean they don't release it privately to paying customers.  They also speak directly with product flow managers from all retailers to discuss how much product each retailer should be receiving.  I'm sure all three companies have a good idea of how much of their product is getting into customers' hands.

WEll I guess we can't say we are that surprised. Wii's explosion in sales is supposed to take place the next to week's sales data so not that surprised. Although I had guessed 400k, I thought Nintendo would have at least kept it steady. But man sales really are going to jump haha.

But PS3 and 360 sales are kinda dissappointing really. You'd think with Wii below 200k they could have increased more.

Oh well. DS is ungodly of course.

Now the interesting thing will be software. Nintendo may not have had the hardware, but software was there. Wonder how much the titles sold this week.

I went to a Best Buy in New Orleans at 8:00 (thier special holiday opening time) this morning to purchase a GPS which was on sale for my brother and noticed that they had Wiis in stock. A worker was at a table not far from the front door giving them to the patrons who wanted to purchase. I called a few of my co-workers, my fiancee, my mom and a few other people to see if they knew anyone who was in need of one and nobody could think of any at the time so I purchased the GPS and walked out (was in store for maybe 10 mins max and I seemed to be the only person in line WITHOUT a Nintendo system in my hands). i got to my car and my mom called me back saying that her neighbor was looking for one so I turned around to go back in and guess what...THEY WERE GONE. I asked when they expected more. He said they had 75 this morning, but the total they had in stock was 250 and for me to ask one of the managers when the'd be putting more out. I don't know if they'll put more out later today or if they'll break them up each morning up until the weekend. Since me, my fiancee and my mom already have Wiis, I wasn't in a big rush to get one.  I don't think this was readily advertised b/c a LOT of people in line with me were just as surprised as I was that they had them. Many of them were going in to make movie/gps/appliance purchases or to return something and noticed a line near the door and naturally wanted to know what it was for
