Two of the biggest franchises out there. For the generation, across all platforms, Mario Kart Wii is so far the third best selling game (second only to Wii Sports and Wii Play). New Super Mario Bros. DS is the fourth best selling game, Mario Kart DS eigth and New Super Mario Bros Wii tenth.

So far this year, the two franchises are incredibly close. The sales of the games are

New Super Mario Bros Wii - 332k
Mario Kart Wii - 300k
Mario Kart DS - 196k 
New Super Mario Bros DS - 191k

Which totals out to

New Super Mario Bros -  523k
Mario Kart - 496k

In 2010, New Super Mario Bros sold quite a lot more (14.8 million vs 9.2 milion), but this year it's a lot closer. So, which franchise do you reckon will sell more this year? Also, how much do you think they'll sell?

Why not? It was at E3 in video form last year. I think it could be a holiday title.

Youn know that NSMB Wii 2 will be releasing this holidays too, right?

I voted for NSMB, but I know nothing, so ignore my vote.

No NSMB:Ninext will be the next NSMB game. A release of a NewSuperMarioBros2:Wii would canabalize NSMB:Wii sales. They would only release a second one on Wii if the first one was starting to die, but lets face it the first one is still doing great.

I agree with Rol MarioKart:3DS will probably be a holiday title this holiday. Boosting sales of that franchise far out of reach of NewSuperMarioBros (This year). All those saying just wait NewSuperMarioBros:3DS will come this winter. Miyamoto specifically said that the Mario game in development for 3DS is a 3D title with depth in gameplay never done before in a Mario game. Meaning no NSMB:3DS.

Its a no brainer and Mario Kart will waste NSMB!

But if sequels canibalize sales, why is Just Dance 1 still selling good? And if did, why were ther 3 Mario games on the NES? I bet all of them were still selling good when their sequels came.
