problems with DSi Wi-Fi connection

I have a DSi-xl and it seems that i can't connect to open Wi-Fi spots. I created my own Hot Spot from my macbook and it won't connect and i've tried multiple areas locally in the city with open connections and still no luck. Can anyone help me out here with why and what this device is capable of in terms of internet connection. Thanks in advance!

What are you trying to connect? Should notice there are different encryptions depending on the software you are trying to use. For DSi software like the browser you can use WPA, for DS games it only works for WEP.
