Forums - Gaming - My thoughts on the NGP and the 3DS!

Okay I need to state two things before I start:

1.  The "NGP= Nintendo Got Pwned" crap is getting old.  It was funny at first but it got ridiculous.

2.  This is just MY OPINION.  Go look at the specs of BOTH before someone starts making "random" comments.

So now that that's out of the way let me start.  Alright so now that everyone has calmed down a bit with the "NGP sucks" or "3DS sucks" or "Is the NGP the doomest thing ever?"(Okay I have to admit that was pretty funny.  Nice job guy with the fat funny looking sumo for a default pic.)  I wanna give my thoughts on the situation.  This is what I think of both handhelds:

3DS:  DS with PS2 graphics, glasses-less 3D(nice job Ninty), and an analog stick

PSP2(NGP):  PSP with PS3 graphics(kinda), a touch pad, a touch screen, the motion thing(Im gonna call it PSP2 six axis), extra analog, 2 cameras, trophies, 3G.

Honestly, I would pick the PSP2 over the 3DS when it comes down to features.  Glasses-less 3D really isn't that big of a deal.  On the software side, 3DS has an edge because it's more diverse.  But they both offer a nice amount of quality titles.

Which one will sell more?  I don't care.  Why? Because they're both going to be excellent pieces of technology that will give us great gaming experiences for years to come.  If I had to pick which one would sell more, I'd say the 3DS because it's more diverse and people are going to go gaga over the glasses-less 3D(until they go blind!  Lol jk)  Also because it will release sooner, and will be cheaper than the PSP2.  But just because the PSP2 gets outsold by the 3DS doesn't mean it's going to be a "failure."  The Wii outsells the 360 and PS3.  That doesn't mean that the PS3 and 360 are failures.  I expect the PSP2 to release at $300.

If I only had money for one, I would buy the PSP2.  Just because LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted, Resistance, Killzone, Call of Duty, Monster Hunter > the only 3 games I'm interested in coming out for the 3DS(Ocarina of Time, MGS3, KH:3D)  But I'll be buying neither come launch day.  I'm already busy enough with my PS3, Wii, DS, and PSP.   I'll probably wait till next year to get both.

PS:  The PSP was not a failure.  People(some people here at VGC) just say it's a failure because the DS sold more.

Please, just please, stop any discussion about available software. Has the NGP even had 24 hours since its reveal? Really, WAIT a little until you discuss more deverse/less diverse software. Discuss POSSIBLITIES.

Otherwise, good thread.

Yeah, software is still unknown, but otherwise I completely agree.

Just appreciate the machines Nintendo and Sony cooked up for us and buy the one that has the games you like. Or both if you can/want afford it.

I personally will buy a 3DS because I love Mario and Zelda games. So I really don't have much of a choice here.

Yeah agreed for the most part.  Both have great features, and it's likely the 3DS will outsell the PSP2 (I'm more interested in the latter myself).  But, as you say, not selling the most hardware doesn't denote failure.

Also Xen has a point, the 3DS is launching in a few months, and the PSP2 was just announced so even attempting to compare their lineup is simply impossible as we have no idea what will actually launch with the PSP2 (and odds are Nintendo probably has a few surprises of their own in store for the few remaining months left before launch).  However, the 3rd party dev support for the PSP2 is extremely robust, so at least we know both pieces of hardware are going to see wide support across the board.

The 3DS has better graphics than the PS2.

Also, the 3DS has the motion-sensing Gyro and 2 camera's as well (for photo's in 3D). On top of that, the 3DS has Mii's and reverse play for using DS games. The 3DS doesn't -just- have 3D but also a slider to perfectly control it.

NGP - Trophies are just as useless as I ever thought they were. Touch pad seems cool, but not cooler than 3D IMO. Dual Analog is something I only care about for shooting games. So shooters are definitely going to be the place to go for NGP, but since when did I want hardcore shooting games that badly for a handheld?

Honestly, if the NGP is $350, I don't think it's really worth it. The 3DS was already pushing it with $250 for a handheld, so even if the NGP is $300, that's still too much already. They  could have added a crap ton of power and features to the 3DS as well, but if it comes at that high a cost, the better system to get IMO is clearly the 3DS. When it comes to games, it looks as if Sony's usual plan is in order: Porting games from their consoles for a console experience. The PSP lost to the DS because it didn't feel like a handheld, it felt like last gens PS2 on the go, while the DS personalized itself quite well. It all comes down to the games, in the end.

I agree with your comparison of the graphics between the two. I think it is a tad early to be comparing the two on software.

I believe the 3DS will get much more publicity, not only because it is Nintendo, but because of the glass-less 3D, which is meant as a direct hit at Sony's glasses required 3D home entertainment experience. I have been repeating this for some while.

This being said, the graphics of the 3DS will be chopped up, organized, analyzed, and criticized by the industry. I will not be surprised if Wired magazine and others write Op-Ed pieces on how unimpressive the graphics are for the 3DS once the 3D is turned off.

I am expecting some blogger to say the graphics for the 3DS are a "full-on Monet." Meaning they are pretty when the 3D places them afar and distracts your view, but ugly up close if you choose to play without the 3D enabled.

As for the NGP, from what I have seen there is little to criticize. Sony as usual is sticking with their modus operandi in putting out the platform enabled to have the best graphics possible.

As usual, the machine with more power and stronger graphics is apparently the "better" one.

At this point, yes because hardware specs are all we have to go off of. After E3 when the NGP initial software lineup is revealed, then we can start a fair assessment of comparing software.

Both will have generous 3rd party support and neither is "dOOmzed."
