Forums - Sony - Will NGP suffer the same fate as the PSP?

I think many people will buy it to emulate Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube and boot a shitload of awesome homebrew apps.

Depending on the price, there're already iDevices for that (as well as some Linux-based portables). I wouldn't mind personally, but I doubt Sony will be happy about homebrew activity on the platform, it doesn't generate software revenue.

CoD and Monster Hunter can be huge if done correctly. I'd like to see a decent GTA and FF title as well. But again, these are all spin-offs! Sony should invest in new franchises (portable RPG's and such).

Inevitable use, thought. Whether they like it or not.

As architectures differ from platform to platform, it probably won't be a major selling point.

Emulating a Wii (essentially two ducktaped gamecubes) with a PC requires a surprising amount of power/hardware. The only dreamcast emulator that I saw running on a PSP was going at 3-5 fps, which is pretty evocative of the disparities between consoles.

Looking from previous experience, COD might be a decent seller on portables, but not even close to home consoles. There're CODs on PSP and DS, all (?) of them have online play and most of them are close or over 1M sold. Granted they're not as close to home console experience as likely NGP version will, but I severly doubt this kind of experience regardless of how close to original will fit handhelds well, thus sales won't be at 10M plus range. Good multiplayer experience on portables are Pokemon, Monster Hunter, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart etc., except for Mario Kart all these games are doing great exclusively on handhelds.

It also requires a wiimote, nunchuk and sensor bar, otherwise you won't be far relying with a keyboard and mouse.

And thing is: 3DS will get a 3D enabled COD version too, and if done correctly it may look sick. It may be a selling game for PSP2 but it will also be for 3DS.

Like many others I don't think PSP's sales and performance is anything to snuff at. The PSP did what nobody else could they managed to take a larger marketshare from Nintendo then anyone has ever taken before.  Also PSP managed to beat GameCube and X-Box's numbers which is also very good for a handheld. The GameGear , Neo-Geo Pocket, WonderSwan , Gizmondo and the countless others that have failed over the years were all great systems but PSP out did all of them.

PSP revolutionalized the handheld market like no one has ever done before. They made a second console an actual legit choice. PSP also extended the PS2's lifespan by a few years through porting. The PSP also brought several new software titles to the market which many would not have seen the light if not for PSP.

I think if this new NGP manages to do half of what the PSP did it will still be more successful then GameGear which is the second most successful handheld console to date.

My main issue with this whole thing is that it seems too much like a PS3.  How is this experience going to be unique or different other than offering a PS3-on-the-go experience? Honestly, I prefer playing most of those PS3 games on a big screen-- especially FPS games.

I won't mention price until we can't an official one, but this can't be cheap.

Most anticipated games of 2011:

Uncharted 3,Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Rocksmith

Modern Warfare 3, Super Mario 3D

From what I'm seeing now PSP2 has few really strong points about it:

- all the developers were talking how easy it was to port games from PS3 - that means it will have massive library at startup (and yeah they will be ports but guess what - 3DS library is in huge part ports too).

- they seem to be going to push online gaming - they are like portable X360 here comparing to nintendo with friend codes

- they will have trophies and ps3 cross platform gaming - so they will be trying to expand PSP userbase with people who already have PS3

- monster hunter confirmed - that alone ensures solid initial sales in Japan

So imho it won't outsell 3DS but should get higher market share than PSP did.
