Forums - Sony - PSP2: What it Really Needs

There is really no chance Sony would ever consider UMD to be a priority, and imo the inclusion of umd in the psp2 would be suicide.

What Sony can do however is create an adapter which is simply an external umd drive which can plug into the psp2, (as well as the go) and this would solve all of your problems.

One could possibly even do a one time transfer from umd to the hard drive maybe so umd's could still be enjoyed on a protable system in todays modern world, as they would be essentially converted into digital games.

Nice thread, it was a good read. I'm sure Sony will have everything correct for the PSP2 but I would not be suprised if it is $350 at launch.

Considering your solution to the UMD issue, that does sound like a nifty idea. The one time transfer would be cool(possibly erasing data from the disc after copied or forcing you to crack the plastic casing so they will no longer play in PSP).

As far as pricing tho I would be satisfied with 350 with the kind of tech it might be bringing but the sweetspot is 250. Either way I will be getting one CLOSE to launch(always wait to weed out defectives).

it needs big exclusives with Miley Cyrus or Justin Bieber to broaden its audience.

Brain Training and Nintendogs had more to do with the broad appeal that what you mentioned. Original content specific for the system, not console hand me downs.

very much agreed. It needs more Patapon, Holy Invasion of Privacy Badman!, 30sec Hero, Crimson Gem Saga, and similar titles that are actually built around a handheld's hardware not downports from a console architecture.

all it needs is a HUGE GIGANTIC protective security system so that even Geohot cannot hack it !

Hacking and Piracy is a big issue for Sony. Hopefully they have developed something more concrete in keeping them back.

I'd settle for a system with lots of core games and a thriving indie developer platform for small third parties to make games on. Nintendo has the games I wouldn't ever wanna play genre pretty nailed down, id hate to see SONY go that route.

A UMD to digital copier is never gonna happen for two main reasons.

1) Licensing. SONY needs permission from the developer of each and every game to do this.

2) Same reason apparently as the reason not all games on the PSP appear on PSN, game developers are stupid and don't wanna do it.

Conegamer - I say that the PS3 will beat the DS next week in Japan  (for hardware sales) Forfeit is control over others avatar for 1 week.

14 is most of what they need.  More handheld games and less HD ports.  It seems Sony gives way to much attention to HD ports and graphics with the PSP.  Nintendo has shown that graphics don't mean a whole lot on handhelds, it's quick, pick up and play games.

psp2/ps3 cross platform gaming ....

also you should be able to play the multi plats you own on ps3 on your psp2 also.

Being in 3rd place never felt so good

I take it you're willing to pay $2000 for this thing, then?

It sounds delightful. Unfortunately, good things are expensive.
