The majority of the gaming market isn't made up of "core" gamers, or otherwise the very word "core" would be totally meaningless.
You can say that the Wii has few games that cater to that audience all you want, but I can very well argue that neither the 360 nor PS3 have prices that cater to the audience that bought (and is still buying) PS2s in droves. Also, another thing these masses aren't, is very well informed, so they'll pick up the thing they already know - the PS brand (if not instantly spooked by the price) - or maybe more likely, the thing that's fashionable (guess what). Maybe later down the road they'll buy the consoles that host their popular franchises (GTA), probably on the machine they already know about (PS3), as is already happening to a degree in Europe (FIFA and PES on the PS3). This, again, if not instantly spooked by the price, which some will definitely be.
All in all, my point is, I don't think you can really state as a fact that: 145m people owned PS2s and Xboxes; only (or as much as) 22m people already made their pick, and it was the PS3 or 360; the other 120m people ain't going to chose the Wii. That's far to simplistic, and IMO, not even close to an accurate representation of reality.
