Valve hopes PS3 Steamworks extends beyond Portal 2

Posted January 20th, 2011 at 13:04 EDT by Mike Harradence

Valve’s hinted that more titles could benefit from the company’s Steam service on PlayStation 3 at some point in the future.

The developer announced this week that its PS3 version of puzzler Portal 2 will support Steam functionality when the game hits shelves in April 2011.

Naturally, this has sparked hope that the studio may extend the service to other games later down the line on Sony's platform. And, while Valve’s keeping mum on any plans, it seems future Steam support is a possibility.

Chatting with ARS Technica, Valve marketing boss Doug Lombardi commented, "We are hoping other titles will benefit from the Steamworks tools and services we've created for Portal 2 PS3, but we don't have anything to announce today."

Portal 2 sees players tackling a fresh onslaught of brainteasers and test chambers either solo or as part of the brand-new co-op mode, the latter of which features its own unique campaign and characters. Fans of the original may also be chuffed to learn that crafty computer GLaDOS will be popping up in the game too.

thats great news, i'd be buying PS3 Valve games so i can get them on steam as well, just  like a gaben in a candy store.

I sure hope so too! It would be amazing if the industry would accept the concept of buying of the game, and not just a copy of a version of the game. Moving from platform to platform would be a much greater experience!

i dont care for Valve and steam.. but still, Steam on PS3 would be simply amazing for Sony and Valve.

I'm a Foreigner, and as such, i am grateful for everyone pointing out any mistakes in my english posted above - only this way i'll be able to improve. thank you!

I swear have Valve been taken over by zombies or something O.o Wasnt that long ago Valve couldnt care less if the ps3 was burnt to ashes's...Now they are practicaly married O.o

I have no complaints though ^^ I was stuck as to whether to get the game for Steam or PS£ but since if i get the ps3 now i get the steam one free my problem is solved :P

Its really smart on valves part. What better way to get console users onto steam than to give them a free game on it. Get your ps3 portal game, you see you can play it on your pc too for free, install steam on your pc, see the deals they offer on pop up-and bam new customer. Would be even better if ps3 controllers can be used on pc (maybe they can I don't know) so you take that key board/ mouse worry away from the console users.

I hope so too Valve, I hope so too

Time for hype

I can't imagine Valve putting in the time/effort to get Steamworks on PS3 just so Portal 2 can update itself.  The only reason I can see for adding Steamworks to the equation is as the prelude for a major Valve presence on PS3.

It's clear that Valve initially favoured MS& Live until it became clear MS only wanted their games and had no interest in allowing Valve to penetrate their own digital gaming infrastructure.  I doubt they're swinging this effort behind PS3 - and Gabe basically eating crow in public on a platform - just for Portal 2.

However it was agreed Sony have clearly decided to share their PSN infrastructure with Valve's Steamworks for Valve titles - and I'm very interested to see where that goes post Portal 2.

Of course, Portal 2 selling well on PS3 would help.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I have a dream. That one day. PS3 owners and PC owners will be able to play all of there favorite multiplats together online. I hope valve makes this dream a reality. If so the Online community for PC & PS3 will have a huge surge.  :)

sony should allow valve to put steam on ps4.

Being in 3rd place never felt so good
