Forums - General - Any Physics students out there?

I'm about to start with my Masters degree and I would like to hear some opinions from you guys. I have a choice to make; Either I do my Masters in

Material Science

or in

Accelerator and Nuclear Physics.

So PLEASE feel free to give your opinion based on the field itself, the job market, current and future research etc. etc.

At the moment I'm leaning towards Material Science because it would be a sure fire way to get into the technology industry. Think LCD, LED etc. Well, there's so many interesting applications.

Nuclear Physics is more developed i.t.o infrastructure and reliable funding though. It also doesn't mean that I'll definitely be working at a Nuclear Power Plant!

Ultimately my dream is still to work in the games industry... *sigh*

Woah. No comments from anyone. Mmmmkay.

With all due respect, you probably aren't going to find many nuclear physicists here. A videogame message board probably isn't the best place to get advice on which masters degree to pursue and how the job market is for people with master's degrees. Have you ever been to a midnight launch of a videogame? Those are the people you're talking to. The nineteen year olds with awkward facial hair wearing trench coats in summer. There are a handful of well educated people here, but as far as I know, I haven't seen any physics and material science majors.

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.

I'm no Physics student, but if your main goal is to eventually work in the videogame industry....

I'd say go with Matieral Science.

I just see it having more videogame applications in the future... seems like you could make some cool games based on Matieral Science Physics.  Some good puzzle games involving making things have the BEST structure, taking and increasing carbon to make the best use of things etc. and maybe even some more complex games based around it, and also would help because you'd know how shit breaks and stresses and could make stuff more relaistic then pretty much any other gamedesigner.

But.... thats a pretty trivial reason to pick a major.

I'm a physics student. We also have at least one graduate here in WereKitten.

I can't really say much for the market (specially this specifc market) but I guess you do learn a lot that can be useful in many situations. It sure takes some dedication but I guess you know that. May I ask why this particular field?

Material Science based on the fact that you'll be able to find an actual job (which is why I'm in ME and not Physics).

First, please get other advice.  I'm sure there are plenty of people in real life that you could ask that would have a much better idea than anyone here.  Professors, other students, people you may have met in these fields, family, whatever.

I've got a BS in mechanical engineering.  I've got a buddy who is getting a doctorate in nuclear engineering.  Based on what I know, you are going to have a wider range of opportunities with the Material Science degree.  It is a broad, broad field, and you can take it whatever direction you want.  With nuclear, you are going to be more limited in where you work, and what you do.  If you really like nuclear though, maybe that doesn't matter to you.

I don't really have much idea about the job market or research in either field.

Yeah so I'm thinking its time to leave VGC forever...
