Forums - Gaming - The Game of the Year awards are flawed!

Okay maybe they are not flawed but they are quite annoying. Im watching the golden globe awards right now and the game of the year wards and movie awards have one thing in common. And that is that one movie or game pretty much wins every single major award. When I was going through the vgchartz and gamespot goty awards the only game i saw was red dead redemption. I think rdr won 75% of gamespot's awards. Sure it was good but did it do all of those things better then the other games? Sure RDR should have won overall goty, but heavy rain should have won best story (i thought the game portrayed a better story), and maybe god of war 3 for best ps3 game. But RDR takes all 3 of those awards. Why do critics that one game game or movie is better than all of the other games/movies in every way?

In some cases it's just a no-brainer that a game should win multiple categories. If a PS3/360 multiplat is the superior game of the year, by necessity it is the superior game on both platforms as well, but that doesn't excuse other categorical issues, because that same PS3/360 game might not have the best graphics, music, or artstyle, though these awards tend to get concentrated thus

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I wasn't happy Inception didn't win that many rewards since it was an great movie, far the best. Sure Social network wasn't that bad but when i watched it, it felt like it finished rather quickly, and i know its an true story but it ended suddenly when things started to pick up.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

Inception didn't win any award tonight.

also, social network will be almost as forgetable as last year's winner in Oscar... by a movie named Hurt Locker. in 10 years, nobody would have heard about movie.

once again proves that reviewers are old, stubborned, and desperately out-of-touch

That ain't necessarily so.  A lot of publications actually disqualify the GOTY from winning any other award except game of the year.  Others like EGM and Game Informer don't just automatically give everything to the Game of the Year.  Red Dead won game of the year and best ending but didn't win in tons of other categories that it was qualified for.  Sometimes the GOTY does everything better than everything else (Uncharted 2 for example).  Sometimes it's just more than the sum of its parts (GTA: San Andreas for example).

Well for movies it can be due to the production values.... I'd argue that LOTR probably had the best costumes, best FX, best many things due to the budget they had to do it and the people being actual fans so doing the job doubly well... But yes that is a special case.

In games, well you're correct, although the budget is still a factor, it is very less so, and there is no reasons why one game should have all the honors.

Sadly the way people do this is by increasing the categories so that the game of the year contender don't even compete with each other.

OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO

Man I thought the Hurt Locker was the shittest movie I've seen in a while, then it goes ahead and gets proclaimed as the next best thing since sliced bread. I was not happy for a while, and still am not. Those awards are alot of shit, but if this were up to gamers COD would win everything, as the install base just heavily outnumbers everything else, except maybe on this site :x
