game reviews are as neccessary as any sort of criticism in any field, be it comercial products or art(in this case a mix of both)

but my point is reviews are not necessary

if people did not depend on them, they would not exist

the world wont end, consumerism will not stop, the only that will is the potential influence one person or organization has on a product

if you produce something, then you are exposing it and therefore subejcting it to external criticism.  We may manage to supress our interest in reviews but they will never die, because opinions are like butts, every one has one and they stink.  Apart from that its good to know what other people think about something to avoid closed-mindedness

No.

Reviews can be really helpful and sometimes generate productive discussions.

Why don't you make like a tree and get out of here?

I'm not against reviews, but I'm against scores.

Its just about knowing which reviewers not to trust, I have two of the major american review sites (not sure if we are allowed to name them, sorry still a bit new at all this) that I know are ALWAYS wrong so I do the opposite of what they say, They gave atelier rorona, nier and castlevania 6/10 or less so I bought them all (and liked every single one, 2 of them made my top 10 games ever, I also wasnt even going to buy castlevania but when I saw one of them give it a 5/10 I thought I should pick it up, and its a solidly enjoyable game). While on the other hand games they rate highly (around 8.5 or more) are generally awful and I find myself taking them back within the 7 day money back return period (by which time I have normally finished them anyway as they are so short, I'm a  bit of a completionist and i force myself to at least finish the story in even the worst of games). The exception to this rule is Bayonetta, which rated bhighly with both and was amazing, but that is an anomaly in the extreme

There are a few review sites i semi trust, but that is shaky at best, I generally find knowing who not to trust and acting accordingly is far more reliable.

THe idea of buying a game based on how it looks is dumb. Publishers send out those images so they choose the show you what they want you to see. And its not like there are demos for every game out there, SOny and Ninty just started to do that so yeah im going to keep reading reviews to avoid bad games

NOOOOO! I will I ever know if I recieved my money's worth for Go Play Lumberjacks???

(..) the score given by a reviewer has no factual bearing on its value, so by not reading them, their influence is diminished, which is the main problem with reviews

Here is where you got things wrong

Yes, the score of the review could mean little, but READ reviews is useful as they can provide some information about the game. Is gameplay enjoyable, control well, got some bugs/issue and so on.

Usually to got better idea about one game, i go on Metacritics and read some reviews (the low ones, high ones and few middle ones), this can help you to have better idea about the game by telling what they like and what is brokenin the game, even more if they are several to discuss about the same points.

After, the score doesn't matter, what matter is if what you read and see of the game look like something you can enjoy. For exemple i really enjoyed the Civilization spin off "alpha centauri" even after read so-so reviews because i know that the meh graphics won't bother me and that the core game is a good civilization one with new technologies and some other extra (design your own units from parts...)

But we must first concentrate ourselves on the way to entertain people, for video games to live. Else, it's a world where sales representative will win, which has as effect to kill creativity. I want to say to the creators all around the world:"Courage, Dare!". Shigeru Miyamoto.
