It doesn't seem Sony networking division is making too much money since the PS3 project began.

Doesn;t look like Microsoft should even be in the video game business at all based on those loses.

Well the only thing to say about those abysmal MS numbers is at least the wiggly line is going up instead of down lol. But red is red, and the PS brand is slowly slipping into it, it'll still be a while before MS crawls out of it though lol, but at least it's increasing, and wow @ that 2005-2007 MS slump. RROD did wreck havoc. And ffs @ Nintendo, insane profits haha lol.

It depends. Maybe MS is doing so so Sony doesn't erode their OS business.

Sony only makes the XMB os, which really is a better OS then Windows in most cases. Hence why their TVs, Blu-ray players, and computers have it installed. Its just that the PCs also have Windows on them.

But I'm meaning in a financial standpoint. How is Microsoft's shareholders allowing such loses. Not even just the Xbox, Zune and other projects are all basically failures. WP7 is the only thing thats giving revenue and thats because it falls back on the base thing the Microsoft does which is Operating Systems.

Sony has had profit for the last few fiscal quarters. That line should be heading north again.

Think again. If Sony owns the living room, they can kick MS out of it. It could mean less windows installed in pcs, if the PS3 provides almost the same functionality than a standalone PC. MS lives and dies by the Windows and Office sales, XBox division is only a trojan horse to destroy Sony's attempts to control the living room. They don't care Nintendo, Nintendo isn't going to create a strong multimedia experience, they create consoles to play games. I'm sure that if Nintendo controled the PS generation, MS wouldn't have created the XBox brand.

Try again:

One black quarter, and a tiny amount in comparison with what they lost the previous year. The Networking division is the NPS. You can find all that information in the Sony investor relations page:

It'd be interesting to know how old that graph picture is going from 1998 to 2010, and wheter it actually covers 2010 itself, i should imagine if Microsoft didn't spring above the loss/profit line for the year ending 2010, that they certainly will have at the end of 2011.

The thing is that the PS3 hardware is profitable now. That is massively different then 2009 where they were still losing money. The PSN service is still in the red though, but that should easily negate itself as more users start buying services and software. Plus more companies advertise in Home.

That graph is updated up to April last year. You can get the new data from MS, Sony and Nintendo investor relations pages.

Sony since then:

Q4 FY09 (January to March 2010) : -7 Bn yen: http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/fr/viewer/09q4/slide/image/19_image.jpg

Q1 FY10 (April to June 2010): -3.8 Bn yen: http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/fr/viewer/10q1/slide/image/05_image.jpg

Q2 FY10 (July to Sept 2010): 6.9 Bn yen: http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/fr/viewer/10q2/slide/image/05_image.jpg

Total since the end of the graph: -3.9 Billion yen, with an exchange rate of ~85 yen/USD, we have a net loss of ~45 million dollars. It's a tiny amount for Sony, but they kept losing money since then.

At the last quarter rate, they need ~53 quarters to recover all the losses since 2007. Hardly a relief for Sony investors. This is not a 10 years plan, this is a ~13 years plan :)

It would be really unfortunate if Nvidia has profited more from the PS3 than Sony ...

Well Nvidia has apparently made a lot of money from the PS3.

Sony on the otherhand may have the biggest financial failure in gaming history.

I thought MS went with ATI because Nvidia had high royalties on the original Xbox.
