Good....I hope they win

They have no chance of winning. Reverse engineering a product which is essentially what GeoHot has done is totally legal.

Sony surely have better things to spend money on...

All they are trying to do is show "others" who have the intention of doing similar things that we can and will make your life miserable for a long time.   This GeoHot guy is going to be broke for the rest of his life almost any way this thing plays out.  So I hope he does put up a legal defense fund, I would bet he ends up getting a decent amount from people who feel sorry for him.  I may even donate a few bucks and I haven't even hacked my PS3.

If my understanding is correct GeoHot doesnt need to do anything. Precendents have alrady been set.

What he did was not illegal it may contravene the TOS for the PS3 he used but thats meaningless. Expect the court to summarily dismiss.

I agree with you though it's more SONY posturing than anything else.

I don't think it will be as easy as a court basically dismissing the case.  I have a feeling that Sony will indeed get them into court and then Sony will drag the thing out as long as they possibly can.  Meaning more money to Lawyers and thus grief infliction.

I do believe that GeoHot will win in the long run but is a win with a huge debt a real win?  I sort of think no.

If this guy was "smart" he would have sold his technique to the chinese and become a multimillionaire over night.  Instead he gave it away free and will probably be broke the rest of his life.  No matter if he wins or not, he will have to spend whatever money he has on lawyers and Sony can and will drag this out as long as they possibly can just to make this poor bastard pay.  Even though they know they will probably lose this case.  "Apple has already went down this road and lost".

I really don't understand a lot of these posts in here about the guy doing this all for Pirating.  He has stated over and over that the onlything he wanted to do was have homebrew on the PS3.  Sony took out Linux and they should have known that was a big mistake.  Where there is a will there is a way and I think that has been proven now. So instead of just having linux and homebrew, they have that and the ability for millions to pirate games.

While I do not pirate games, I will probably end up "hacking" my console to add a truly epic media center (Like the old XBMC on the original xbox).  The original xbmc was awesome, and I dare say that the one that eventually comes out for the ps3 will be awe inspiring.  I am also guessing that there will be a better browser coming as well.  Only time will tell what kind of awesome sauce is made.  And I can't wait.

What If someone copies the key to YOUR house and sells it on the web for free. He's doesn't want to hurt you and he's not responsible what others do with the keys. Is this ok for you?

Worst analogy EVER !

I was going to say that also but you beat me too it.  Since he doesn't understand even his on analogy I will try and help him.  First of all Geohot isn't giving people a copy of anyone elses "key"  he is allowing them to make their own copies.  so as for your example.  He is just giving me the machine to copy my own key.  DOH..... That would be great, now I can make as many keys to my house as I ever want! YIPPIE!!  I love me some keys....

In my opinion the ps3 root key it's not "your" key. It's not part of the hardware.  I may be wrong but I think a private key is like a signature. It's Sony's property and you cannot own it. I'm not sure if it's ok to distribute private keys.

Geohot said to BBC that he is "scared of being hit with a lawsuit". "I am confident I would win since what I released was just a number obtained by running software on the PS3 I purchased".

Since he talks about numbers ant not root keys it may be not ok/legal to distribute.

I see a lot of hypocrisy here. How many of you have a jailbroken  IOs device? How many condone Wii or XBox360 piracy? I've never seen in this forum all this aggressiveness with Geohot or any other hacker until they targeted Sony and the PS3.

I guess you and Sony agree with this.  However most people in the world do not.  You may sign an agreement with Sony in order to receive updates etc..  But its been proven in court over and over that most of these agreements are not worth the paper they are printed on or the time spent typing one up digitally.

There have been many many EULA agreements beaten in court, and they are basically scare tactics.

Everything that noname2200 has said. ;o)

They can try, sure. They'll have about as much success as vs. Dark_Alex . . . who was still making CFW under a psuedonym long after they bitched at him.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

but even him wanting to do it only for homebrew is not something thats supposed to be done on sonys console right and he knew what people would turn it into so its his own fault.

Ugh, the people supporting Geohot are just so weird. We've already had breaches going on with SOCOM: Confrontation online, we've had games being pirated, we've had Linux removed because of hackers breaching the PS3's security, we've had someone claim that they're working on a way to take away the DRM on PSN games and all these issues will continue to escalate, but as long as a few thousand people can play Final Fantasy 3 on their SNES emulator on their PS3, then it should be alright.

Sony's intent is to ruin the lives of these few hackers, they probably know that there isn't much else they can do, so they might as well punish the people that started this whole mess and at least try and prevent other from following their example in the future.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

I know that and I don't think Sony will win this.

But i don't like the idea of distributing private keys over the internet. If someone hacks and distributes the private key I use for signing my e-mails everybody could impersonate me and that would be bad (for me).

Ppl think it's ok because Sony are the bad guys but where do you draw the line ???
