If this guy was "smart" he would have sold his technique to the chinese and become a multimillionaire over night.  Instead he gave it away free and will probably be broke the rest of his life.  No matter if he wins or not, he will have to spend whatever money he has on lawyers and Sony can and will drag this out as long as they possibly can just to make this poor bastard pay.  Even though they know they will probably lose this case.  "Apple has already went down this road and lost".

I really don't understand a lot of these posts in here about the guy doing this all for Pirating.  He has stated over and over that the onlything he wanted to do was have homebrew on the PS3.  Sony took out Linux and they should have known that was a big mistake.  Where there is a will there is a way and I think that has been proven now. So instead of just having linux and homebrew, they have that and the ability for millions to pirate games.

While I do not pirate games, I will probably end up "hacking" my console to add a truly epic media center (Like the old XBMC on the original xbox).  The original xbmc was awesome, and I dare say that the one that eventually comes out for the ps3 will be awe inspiring.  I am also guessing that there will be a better browser coming as well.  Only time will tell what kind of awesome sauce is made.  And I can't wait.

What If someone copies the key to YOUR house and sells it on the web for free. He's doesn't want to hurt you and he's not responsible what others do with the keys. Is this ok for you?

Worst analogy EVER !

I was going to say that also but you beat me too it.  Since he doesn't understand even his on analogy I will try and help him.  First of all Geohot isn't giving people a copy of anyone elses "key"  he is allowing them to make their own copies.  so as for your example.  He is just giving me the machine to copy my own key.  DOH..... That would be great, now I can make as many keys to my house as I ever want! YIPPIE!!  I love me some keys....

In my opinion the ps3 root key it's not "your" key. It's not part of the hardware.  I may be wrong but I think a private key is like a signature. It's Sony's property and you cannot own it. I'm not sure if it's ok to distribute private keys.

Geohot said to BBC that he is "scared of being hit with a lawsuit". "I am confident I would win since what I released was just a number obtained by running software on the PS3 I purchased".

Since he talks about numbers ant not root keys it may be not ok/legal to distribute.

I guess you and Sony agree with this.  However most people in the world do not.  You may sign an agreement with Sony in order to receive updates etc..  But its been proven in court over and over that most of these agreements are not worth the paper they are printed on or the time spent typing one up digitally.

There have been many many EULA agreements beaten in court, and they are basically scare tactics.
