Forums - Sony - Sony has a real chance of dethroning Nintendo 3DS

I don't think PSP2 has much of a chance to be much more than a niche gaming system.  Its focus appears to be too similar to what Apple is doing with Iphone and Ipod touch.  The PSP completely relied on the Japanese gaming audience and I think that 3DS might steal away a lot of potential Japanese customers.  Monster Hunter 3DS could be the nail in the coffin.  Once again, the 3DS is getting a good headstart on the PSP2.  If PSP2 can't compete on the gaming front with 3DS then it may not have much of a chance.  Things aren't looking too good right now with the number of 3rd party developers that are flocking to 3DS.

I will await further details on the the PSP2, but it sounds like somewhat of  a redundant system.  There simpy isn't a need for console quality graphics on a handheld.  Successful handheld gaming systems have always used more conservative graphics.  Sony's core focus has to be on gaming, not on all the other aspects that the PSP2 can do.  Apple comes out with a new Ipod touch every year, and the those models will always have more features and apps than the PSP2.

I still don't undertand why the 3DS launch is the "best launch line up for all time". Half the list are ports or remakes. So for the PSP2 to be successful sony  just needs to make ports for ps2 or ps1 games and it will be the best launch line up of all time too? Geez and I thought vgchartz dont dont enjoy the milking of franchises. From what I can tell in this thread most of you  love it!

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Tales of the Abyss, Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D, Super Street Fighter IV 3D, Star Fox 64 and Zelda Ocarina of Time are the only ports and remakes in a list of 72 games. That's not half list, plus the launch titles  have only 1 port (Super Street Fighter IV)

And about the franchises, well just look at the top selling games in every console this generation people love milking franchises until the franchise is dried. (like Guitar Hero)

There are more just look at all of nintendo's games lol

Well, considering we are talking about sales here I don't get this discussion.

The question when talking about sales of the system is how many systems will these games push?

Let's focus on Japan here: Nintendogs is pretty much a million seller. Layton will sell more than half a million units. Samurai Warriors Chronicles is a rather big franchise in Japan, isn't it? And Street Fighter will sell well, too. So from a sales perspective there has hardly ever been such a big launch line-up.

Back to topic: We don't know anything about the PSP2 so far so I won't speculate about its sales potential. But so far Nintendo is doing things right with the 3DS: They still make as many mass market games as they have before (Nintendogs, Mario Kart and Animal Crossing in the first year! That's 3 titles likely to sell more than 10 million units) it's just that 3rd parties are also developing "hardcore" games for the system. There is no opportunity for Sony to place the PSP2 as the "casual" machine because Nintendo is announcing mass market games left and right. There have even been rumours about a new Brain Training game. How can Sony attack Nintendo here? I don't see an opportunity for them, really.

Also Nintendo pushing 3rd parties to develop core games on their system is in no way good news for Sony. Again Nintendo is not in any way reducing their amount of mass market games and 3rd parties neither. If anything we've got a PS2-like situation here were 3rd parties focus both "core" and "casual" games on one system. Or to put it this way: If this was a war between two countries (the core country and the expanded market country ) Nintendo would already have conquered the expanded market country and is invading the core country right now. They are not giving up the expanded market.

The 3DS will most likely launch at 250$ / Euro in the west. So to have a price advantage Sony would have to price its system at 200$. Is that really likely? And with the PSP2 not even announced who says Nintendo couldn't drop the price to 200$ around Christmas 2011? They dropped the DS price to 129$ when the PSP was released.

Anyways, this discussion is pretty stupid without any information about Sony's next handheld so I'll stop it here.

don't think sony will, cause i believe next PSP is going to be HD, and larger size with more features, all these is impossible to maintain price like current PSP... i think the price will be on par with 3DS if it's possible...

Of course it has a great chance, it's obviously somehow going to be more powerful, and have a longer battery life, all while being cheaper.

In that scenario, it's a definite win for Sony.

Sony has only capcom to rely on? yet when im looking at the COMG im seeing what 14 psp games in the top twenty.  Take your nonsense elsewhere...honestly I hope for people's sake your opinion is not highly valued.

I think he meant that the only third Party that has seen constant huge blockbusters seems to be capcom

I'd also like to note that using a preorder chart to prove your point in meaningless, just look at the perorder charts VS the sales charts, little Wii games show up in the former wheares it dominates the latter

But for the record, I think Sony's PSP has more than just Capcom's MH series, it's just that it is so over-shadowed by DS's success that the others seem insignificant in comparison

How many multiplat handheld games are there? How many of the top 50 handheld games are multiplatform? Not many from what I can tell, does that answer your question.

Nintendo: By the way, handheld games don't tend to become multiplatform.

Sony: Oh.

omg I love your posts! :D

for the PSP 2 to dethrone the 3DS they would need to

1. Launch at a similar price as the 3DS (within $50)

2. Have the same or better battery life as the 3DS

3. Have a gimmick at least as good as glasses less 3D

4. Be at least 5 times as powerful as the PSP, to make sure that PSP owners feel like it's a worth while upgrade and 3DS owners see it as a more powerful machine and keep it more powerful than iPhones for a couple years.

5. And this is the most important launch with at least 3 entries in million selling franchises, the 3DS has Nintendogs cats, Super street fighter 4 and Professor Layton .

6. Games within a year of launch to match The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Rabbids Travel Time, Kid Icarus Uprising, Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater, Dead or Alive Dimensions.

7. A list of upcoming games to match Kingdom Hearts 3D, Mario Kart 3DS, Mega Man Legends 3, Animal Crossing, Paper Mario and Resident Evil: Revelations. opps forgot Time Travelers that game looks interesting and this list is likely to get a whole tone longer as I am sure that more games will be announced soon.

I totally forgot Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney

I agree, If Sony pulls all that off they might actually have a fighting chance at being #1 - - especially 3 and 5-7 (which are similar == get blockbusters on PSP2)
