The thing is that Sony doesn't need to outsell 360 or Wii to be massively successful. At the rate things are going now, and with plenty of room for price cuts for all 3 consoles, we could possibly see all 3 sell over 70 million this gen. How is last place a bad thing in that case as long as profits are rolling in?
According to Vgchartz YTD numbers PS3 outsold 360 last year.
360 13.1m PS3 13.8m

Bingo. I usually advise people to observe Sony's past consoles when discussing sales. The PlayStation brand has never been about 1-3 IPs with huge sales, but a plethora of titles "for everybody" that sell enough to get the job done and satisfy the userbase (barring the big guy Gran Turismo, which will sell huge numbers again this time around). PS3 just adds another etch in a historic trend. |
The difference though that you guys are ignoring was that it wasn't Sony's IPs at all last gen that put the PS2 in first. IT had nearly 100% of the third party support with the other two consoles receiving very few exclusives besides first party and the fact that the PS2 appeared to casuals with the huge diverse library. The PS3 is seen as pretty much a hardcore only machine by the common consumer and thats a big problem when it comes to mass market sales.

I'm not debating it's position in the market, I'm speaking about why it's a relevant brand in the first place. But if we head that route, regardless of who's IPs it was that kept the PlayStation brand on top, one thing cannot be argued, it was the approach of "give them something for everyone" that was responsible for such success. That's very much like the PS3 (except the PS3's situation started off too grim to even begin to expect a similar turnout to either the PS1 or PS2). |
Yeah I hear you on that and my posts on here were more directed at the people that were saying Sony's IP's are enough to easily outsell the 360 with a price drop and maybe even the Wii. To be honest they're not, not even close even though IMO Sony has some of the best IP's this gen. At the moment Sony has nothing to counteract Kinect or Wii's huge first party titles like Mario and the Wii series. Basically like you said earlier the PS3 will see healthy sales and be a successful system but IMO its guaranteed 3rd now, Kinect was the final deciding factor.

No, it doesnt. The price gap between PS3 and wii must be at least 150 euros/dollars in order for wii to outsell PS3 on weekly basis (as we saw in september 2009). So Ps3 needs to lower its price for at least 50 euros/dollars to start outselling wii.
with the exception of not getting pirated? Nothing else.
the browser freezes the system. the ram's too low.. Updates take aeons of time.

Ja those are two great ideas but I strongly disagree with your piracy comment. |
that was added later when everybody suggested it
and i started thinking of it
PLAYSTATION brand sells in far more coutries where laws aren't in place to protect copyright infringment
those developing counties still have to buy the HARDWARE to play the pirated software
so they will atleast sell some PS3 HARDWARE in places like SOUTH AMERICA,AFRICA,ASIA,EASTERN EUROPE,ETC
though i do not suggest it or support it, the OP asked what PS3 needs to sell more and that why i answered this way
